Free Trade Contrast and Presidential Parody in 19th Century Irony
The article contrasts English and American wages under free trade, noting Manchester operatives’ comfort while Fall River spinners face wage cuts. It cites Mr. Shaw of Manchester supporting wage fairness, then savors a political jab at Buchanan era norms. It ends with a wry critique of naval amusement by later presidents and Edmunds generosity.
