Seen On King Street During The Week

A law office lost bricks from its lower corner possibly from youthful mischief. Rumors of a car impact and birds nested to blame circulated, but none fit. A green white bird, appeared sick or injured, was found in a doorway, fed, and released after two hours. A small model car on the sidewalk was reportedly moved by pranksters but later drove away under its own power.

Highway Traffic Act Amendments in Force

Legislation effective May 26 tightens driver and pedestrian rules at signals. Pedestrians must not cross on red or during Wait Walk signals unless advised. Yield signs now require slowing to reasonable speed with stop if needed. Right side passing allowed under specific conditions with safety check. Open vehicle doors must not endanger others. A demerit system is studied to record violations. Urban area definitions raise speed limits to 40 mph with building density criteria.

Cavan United Church Welcomes Men's Choir Debut

The Cavan United Church Male Voice Choir, 15 voices, debuted at the church service last Sunday morning. Trained by Mrs. Milford Byers, with Mr. Fraser Carr at the organ, two anthems were sung The Church in the Wild Woods and an arrangement of Fight the Good Fight.

Lions Hold District A Convention in North Bay

A number of Lions and their wives will attend District A Convention in North Bay June 1 to 4 with official delegates staying for the full event. Carloads plan the big parade Sunday. The June dinner on June 16 will include a full report on the convention and the installation of 1958 59 directors. The regular monthly meeting is Monday June 2 at 8 p.m. in the Waiting Room. turnout is urged.

The Lady Lions met at Mrs. W. O Brians home with President Mrs. E Liese mer presiding. Officers nominated for 1958 9 are President Mrs Lawrence Winslow Vice President Mrs E Nattress Secretary Mrs H Lancashire Treasurer Mrs A Payne. Plans for the Garden Tea and Bake Sale at Mrs Liesemers on June 25 from 3 to 5 were detailed. Admission 35c. Mrs H Lancashire won the cup and saucer. Bingo games and prizes followed with refreshments served by Mrs O Bri an, Mrs Nattress and Mrs McMaster.

Minor Lake Shore Baseball Team Sees Narrow Losses and Wins

The local boys under coaches Vince Crough and Elmer Hogg show promise in the Minor Lake Shore Baseball League. After an opening 12 to 2 defeat to Courtice, they beat Courtice 5 to 3 at home, then won 3 to 2 at Orono, and lost 6 to in a close home contest against Port Hope. Next home game is Monday June 2 at 6 30 p.m. against Orono. parents urged to attend and cheer for a win.

CARE IN PROCESSING PELTS PAYS OFF IN BETTER PRICES

The Department of Lands and Forests with the Ontario Trappers Association has educated trappers on better fur preparation for market. Meetings across centres this winter featured officials and veteran trappers showing skinning and curing methods, highlighting price differences at fur auctions between good and bad pelts.

The Baxter's Creek bridge on Distillery Street is rapidly taking shape as Durham Construction Co of Port Hope nears completion. A minor mishap two weeks ago caused a part to give way, but the project is expected to stand as a strong local improvement near the War Veteran's Hall.
