Obituary: Mrs John Patton of Orono dies after illness
Mrs Patton formerly Elizabeth Lunn died at her Orono home on December 18 following a lengthy illness. She married John Patton on June 1 1910 and lived on a Kendal area farm until 1954 before moving to Orono. Born in Manvers she attended Carscaddens School and belonged to United Church, L.O.B.A Past Mistress, Kendal Women’s Institute. Funeral at Orono United Church December 21 conducted by Rev John Kitchen. Survived by husband, son Ray and twin brother David Lunn of Millbrook. Interment Orono Cemetery.

Mr George C Ellsworth erected a feeding box behind his home on King Street to feed winter birds. The “free board” has become popular and daily costs him a loaf of bread to satisfy their hunger.

Centreville Presbyterian Church Holds Annual Meeting
Centreville Presbyterian Church South Monaghan held its annual meeting January 17 noting an average Sunday School attendance of 42. Rev W H Houstin chaired the session and Gerald Anderson served as secretary with detailed reports from officers and teachers including church school leaders and the organist Mrs Muspratt. The treasurers reported solid balances, mission allocations met, and thanks were given to the minister for his service and to the congregation for loyal support during the year.

Cavan Hooton Elected Warden of United Counties
Cavan Hooton was elected warden of the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham on Tuesday afternoon at Cobourg. He defeated Deputy Reeve Garnet Rickard on the first ballot 25 to 23, with Cobourg and most of Northumberland backing Hooton. Rickard carried Port Hope and Bowmanville and much of Durham. Hooton, age 52, is entering his seventh year on County Council and resides at Ida, where he runs beef cattle and mixed farming. He pledged to serve in the counties' best interests and build good relations between them. Rickard congratulated Hooton and offered support.

Young Boys Meet as Old Boys in 1957
A reunion in The Reporter Office on Saturday January 19 brought Fred C. White and Dave King together after more than 55 years. Once neighbours in Almeda Sask, the pair first met in the Western settlement as youths and now meet again as elder statesmen with King accompanied by his son Frank.

Thaw Returns as Snow Vanishes After Cold Snap
After a spell of subzero temperatures a thaw set in washing away snow with heavy rain. Yesterday temperatures rebounded to around zero and the normal pattern resumed as the cold returned.

A large number of small canyons cut in the ice on King Street by melting snow and heavy rain all day and night. Christmas is officially over in Millbrook. the last decorated tree was removed from a local store window on Tuesday.
