Race group gears up for biggest race meet in Milford history

Rolde Burner and aides oversee stable setup and track repairs on the south side of the rails as grandstand work continues. 11,000 stable spaces planned, with Max Baxter and Pred O Leary leading nightly prep. Officials promise sanitary concessions, expanded entertainment between races, and amateur to semi pro acts to thrill spectators.

Milford LDS Seminary to Get New Principal Clarence Tuttle

Stake President A Carlos Murdavis announced the appointment of Clarence Tuttle as principal of Milford LDS Seminary. Tuttle visited Milford last Sunday to discuss the placement, attending Sacrament meeting that evening to ink the arrangement.

Merrill Jameson Buried With Impressive Rites

Jameson, killed on Saipan in 1942, was laid to rest in Minersville with full military honors. More than 500 people attended the Beaver County ceremony led by District Commander J. M. Hughes and Commander Clarence McWhorter. The procession included a 40-vehicle escort to Minersville Cemetery, a funeral guard at the grave, and Taps as a new flag was draped over the casket.

Demos and GOP Slates for Beaver County Tickets

Filing for State Representative neared as candidates from both parties entered slates in Beaver County. Contenders included Joseph H. Murdock and John P. Barton for State Rep, Morgan Griffiths and Carlyle Granning for county commissioners, Obra Myers and Sim Murdock for four year terms, with Iain Hughes also noted. A memorial funeral procession followed the burial of a slain soldier as veterans and community members gathered for the service and grave dedication, with Minersville alumni among those participating in uniform.

Hassell Scott visited his family in Salt Lake last week. His son Keith returned with him. Mr. Scott works for the state Mahway department. Blaine Blackett and family returned from a short visit with relatives. In Cis eleville Bryce and Gene Barton and LaMar and Wallace Fordham and Paul Thompson left Sunday for National Guard encampment at Camp Williams. The Jolly Stitchers 4 H girls met at leader Mrs. Delores Rollins home Friday June 4 with Carline Morris president Elaine Blackner vice president Carol Willins secretary Barbara Fordman cheerleader Celeste Blackner reporter. Carol will assist Mrs Hollins. Meetings Wednesdays next at Celeste Hackier’s home. Delicious refreshments. Gilbert Smith of Beaver has been in Greenville this week doing plumbing. Primary Association annual conference Sunday evening June 13. Everyone is invited to attend.

Lions Club Alleges Beaver Diverted Highway Funds

Milford Lions meeting accuses Beaver residents of diverting 820,000 Highway 21 funds to reroute Puffer Lake road for private gain. District official reports bid for a bridge at Biz Wash. club calls for urgent State Road Commission meeting in Milford to address the matter.

Soap Box Derby Plans Announced By Local Legion

An American Legion committee led by Lynn Gillespie and Hub Mickman will outline Derby rules and prizes in The News. Winners receive a trophy and cash, with the event intended as a summer mainstay and the champion defending the trophy periodically. The St George Lions report on a state convention praising community spirit and the Sun Bowl project. Sam Cline is named club president with a slate of officers and directors.

Zeke Hickman to Lead Milford American Legion Post

Gerald M. Hickman a 28 year old Army Air Forces veteran was elected commander of Milford American Legion Post No. 1 at a regular meeting in the Old Library building. He is among the youngest in the state to hold the post, active since his return from the European Theater of Operations in 1945. Lynn Gillespie and Bud James, both veterans, were named first and second vice commanders respectively. A slate of officers includes John Grimshaw as adjutant, Vernon Burns finance officer, Samm Cline service officer, Richard Nelson chaplain, James Wickman athletic officer, Wayne Waddoups employment officer, James Griffiths sergeant-at-arms, Clarence Grimshaw property custodian, and Rozetta Koch child welfare and sick relief officer. An open-air installation will be held Monday June 21 at the Legion’s new dance pavilion with a joint luncheon and dancing. District Commander J. M. Hughes of Milford Post No. 16 will install. Weekly dances to follow. Mrs. Lettie Fotheringham spent last weekend in Beaver.
