Milford Hosts Civilian Conservation Corps Officials

Civilian Conservation Corps officials and local business leaders attended a Milford dinner in the Union Pacific dining room. Dr Charles R Parrish served as toastmaster as Capt R C Snidow and Lt John C Wade discussed the camp’s West Milford site and local procurement plans. Dr George Stewart outlined watershed and winter range conservation aims, noting the area as an experimental project under prior Hoover measures. Karl S Carlton buys Beaver Press with son Walter aiding operations.

New High Speed Lightweight Train Ordered for Union Pacific

Union Pacific announces order for a 110 mph light weight streamlined passenger train to debut in six months. Design led by E E Adams under C R Gray and W M Jeffers aims to slash weight and cost with aluminum or stainless steel construction, three-car articulated set, air conditioning, and flush windows. First runs will test efficiency on Salt Lake Milford Los Angeles routes, with later potential sleeping cars for transcontinental service.

Milford LDS Church designates next Sunday June 4 as Old Gold Sunday. Congregants asked to bring old gold trinkets or any gold metal to church meetings on that day.

Katherine Griffiths Dies After Operations

Katherine Griffiths fifteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Morgan Griffiths of South Milford died at Milford hospital early Wednesday after an appendicitis operation and a second surgery this week. She was a Milford High School freshman loved by friends. Funeral plans not final but likely Sunday. The County Commissioners meet in Beaver today as a Board for Equalization.

Milford Defeats Beaver Nine In First League Game

Milford defeats Beaver nine 9 to 5 in the Southwest Utah league opener. Claud Horton pitched superbly as Milford jumps to the lead with strong infield and outfield play. Milford Junior League beat Beaver Juniors 17 to 9 in a five inning opener preceding the main game.

Outlook for County Road Work in Beaver County

Beaver County stands to receive a large share of four million dollars in federal Utah road projects this season. R E Ellingsworth reports plans to oil and upgrade sections including Pine Creek hill on highway 91 and nearby routes, with C C C access improvements and secondary road additions in Milford valley and Minersville. Mr and Mrs C W Ejler and Dorothy Mae of Los Angeles visit Milford seeking local property interests, joined by Ethel Phillips.

Civilian Workers Begin Beaver County CCC Camps

Two groups of 21 civilian conservation workers arrived in Milford for Beaver county camps. Recruits aged 19 to 25, mostly Virginians with Southern accents, were stationed at Union Pacific baseball park before dispersing to a desert camp 45 miles west of Milford and to Beaver canyon. Experienced workers followed Sunday evening from Milford to join the Beaver Camp.

Former Milford businessman dies in Provo

Henry Eyring Bowman a former Milford merchant died Tuesday morning at his son Henry E Bowman Jr s home in Provo after a lingering illness at age 74 He was born February 10 1895 in Salt Lake City and attended Brigham Young Academy He married Mary Gubler in the St George Temple on September 1 1885 Surviving are his widow six sons including State Senator Othello C Bowman and Devereux W Bowman in Kanab Henry E Bowman Jr in Provo Claudius Bowman in Mexico Walremer Bowman in Cedar City Harold J Bowman in Salt Lake City May Beth Bowman in Logan and numerous siblings The Milford News editor David S Williams traveled to Cokeville Wyoming to finalize a newspaper property sale The Milford high school building is undergoing cleaning and redecorating under County Superintendent S M Wittwer.
