The South Milford Community Fair on August 28 proved financially sound and showcased strong exhibits. Beaver hosted a large County Fair and Rodeo on September 10–12. Milford Lions Club earned top honors with Mt. Pleasant for civic efforts. A Boys Calf Club formed in September with Horace Palmer as president and Dr. Addison Bybee leading. Harold Cline began practicing law with his brother Sam Cline last fall.
Milford High School under Mel Heslington won three of four games on a county tour. Circleville was thrashed as Milford held them to low points, while Ecalante edged Milford by one point. Next, Milford defeated Bicknell 28 to 16 and Marysvale 38 to 21, as players Fisher Horton Tanner Easton Killam Jones Palmer and Andrews contributed. District games start January 10 with Fillmore at home followed by Hinckley and Minersville.
The American Legion sponsors a public New Year dance at Minersville High School next Monday night with Milford Orchestra. A separate New Year Eve dance at Milford’s Arion Hall features the Milford Orchestra led by Clark Kesler.
Mercury records show Milford and Beaver each won one of two high school football games. Local notes cite new beginnings with Lions Club efforts in October and the Milford town board election on November 6 with no opposition.
Milford residents welcome a wave of university and college students for holiday visits. Among those home are Dorothy and Betty Murdock from California schools, Phyllis and Dorothy Levi from Utah institutions, Bill Cochrane and Wallace Moore from Westminster College in Salt Lake, Beryl Young from Utah, and Mildred Killam Frank Carter and Walter McCulley from Utah State Agricultural College. Carl Murdock returns from Branch A. C. at Cedar City on vacation.
Milton Welling Utah Secretary of State will be principal speaker at a Saturday banquet in the Union Pacific dining room honoring Woodrow Wilson's birthday. Democratic leaders prepare an excellent program. Welling spoke here before and impressed the Milford audience with his eloquence.
The Arcadians from Arcade Ballroom played at the Arion on Monday and Tuesday with strong turnouts especially on Christmas Eve. A Christmas dance featuring the Milford Orchestra drew another large crowd.
Nephi Post commander Gerald Cazier attended a district officers school in Milford last Saturday and Sunday. Utah Department officers were present and provided valuable instruction to Southern Utah post officers with broad post representation, according to Nephi Times News.
County school nurse Misa Coltharp reports that local doctors have again agreed with the county Board of Education to perform minor operations on schoolchildren at half price. Procedures include adenoids and tonsils removal, with parents advised when deemed necessary. The arrangement in Milford runs December 26 to January 4 and covers schoolchildren only, plus 24 hour hospital service locally.
Albert Pike Lodge F A M installed its year officers with large attendance from distant members. Eastern Star Esther Chapter OES held its installation December 17 at the Masonic Hall with Worthy Matron Lulu May Clay and numerous officers installed and banquet served. Mrs. Walter Carlton of Caliente underwent surgery recently.
Telluride Power company energized Scipio with its first electric lights during a gala Monday event. Milford workers led by Foreman Myles and Mrs White attended, bringing power lines from Milford to Scipio for the celebration and returning Tuesday.
Harold Lloyd blends voice and action in his first all talking film Welcome Danger to screen at Victory Theatre next week. He delayed announcing his sound leap until sure the new tech would boost, not hinder, his style, using talk to speed storytelling and heighten gags. Juanita Miller of Salt Lake City spent Christmas in Milford.
Milford observes a joyous Christmas season with two decorated trees and lighted streets. Lions Club arrangement funds and Telluride Power sponsorship supported the business block tree, while Union Pacific provided a second tree and treats for local children. Over 600 candy nuts and fruit treats were prepared, though still not enough for the crowd. Santa arrived by decorated car, and yuletide programs were held at L D S and Methodist churches. Weather was mild with three dances adding social cheer.
The town celebrates a brilliant electric Christmas tree in Milford center as residents note the beauty and spirit of goodwill. Children gaze on the illuminated branches while citizens praise those who conceived and funded the display.
