A wartime Beaver County civilian defense registration drew light attention but soon real duties followed. Tuesday forenoon volunteers received tasks later reinforced by orders Tuesday evening. Local roads proved challenging yet volunteers carried out assignments cheerfully and thoroughly amid brisk pace of events.
Plans for an all church Christmas program on Sunday evening December 21 include L D S Methodist and Christian Science churches joining with civic and auxiliary groups. The event at the recreation hall will begin at 7 30 with mainly musical numbers and a short pageant possibly added. The general public is invited.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cline announce the engagement of their daughter Erina Matie Gillies to Mathew Dell Madsen son of Mr. and Mrs Mathew Madsen of Willard Utah. Gillies teaches at Milford High School and graduated from the University of Utah where she joined Alpha Delta Pi Home Economics and Apri Fine Arts. Madsen also studied at Utah earning a master’s in chemistry and is a chemist at Millencratt Laboratories in St Louis.
Four Beaver County young men are listed to fill the January quota for selective service. Reuben W. Dotson of Minersville Arlo Royal Fox of Beaver Bernard Rawlins of Milford and Houston B. Baxter of Milford report January 22, 1942 at 4:00 p.m. in Beaver and depart by night bus to Salt Lake City. The article notes wartime draft expectations and possible broad changes to deferments and ages for service.
A wartime appeal urges immediate full participation in home defense efforts. Officials warn that preparedness is essential and call citizens to register with W. M. Burns at the Milford Town Office, aiming for several hundred volunteers.
The American Red Cross launches a war fund appeal of at least fifty million dollars with national and local quotas. Milford chapter chairman Norman H. Fortifications are being built at Guam Wake Midway by Morrison Knudsen Boise Tiano, with Idaho and Utah workers among the crews. Marines and workers helped defend amid intense combat in a campaign that will be chronicled as historic.
A force from the Old Hickory mine dismantles mill machinery at Prosper Mining company to install new equipment shipped by Charles H. Segerstrom of the Nevada Massachusetts company. The Prosper mine and mill are being acquired to expand scheelite ore mining and milling on a larger basis.
Beaver county officials order armed guards at the Minersville Reservoir dam to prevent loitering or stopping at the spillway or any part of the dam. Guards will be on duty around the clock for the time being, and the public is urged to keep moving when passing the area. Only authorized persons may stop near the dam.
A fragmented Washington Comment recalls the Pacific upheavals last Sunday and suggests FDR faced travel woes as reports reached Georgia. Secretary Hull relayed Japan's offensive move and the Japanese premier’s pledge to purge American influence in East Asia. Roosevelt immediately returned to the capital amid state department turmoil.
Eleven Milford high school journalists and adviser attended the Ninth Annual Intermountain Journalists conference at Brigham Young University in Provo on December 6. The event drew 476 delegates from Utah Idaho and Wyoming high schools and junior colleges. E E B Monson Utah secretary of state and other professional newspaper figures gave addresses.
Howard C. Wilson, son of J. E. Wilson of Milford, has been promoted from second to first lieutenant after training at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio. A University of Utah graduate, he earned an RO T.C. commission as a second lieutenant and trained at Fort Douglas C.M.T.C. for three summers. He is married to a Texas girl and they reside in San Antonio.
