Milford High to Form Athletic Club for Student Discussion

Milford High announces an Athletic Club where athletes may air grievances about fellow athletes, Coach Neal, or facilities. A preliminary meeting is set for Friday at 7 p.m. in the gym. About 25 players have reported for football subs and passed physicals at Beaver County Clinic. The first game is September 22 at Milford versus Hinckley.

Eight Beaver County youths called for September exams

A news release from Beaver County Selective Service dated August 23 states eight additional young men have been called from Beaver County to undergo preinduction physical examinations on September 18. The Milford area lists include Glenn R. Beard, Dean Bert Anderson, Keith Means Leany, Edwin H. Gale, John R. Nowers, Dennie Neil Manhard, Tex Marshall, and Charles Leland Craw from Minersville.

Utah Liquor Stores Slated for Three Day Holiday

A dry weekend will hit Utah as state liquor stores close Saturday afternoon and reopen Wednesday at 1 p m. Election day will follow the regular Labor Day holiday, leaving a four day gap for drinkers to plan.

State Fair to Offer More Varied Exhibits and Entertainment

The Utah State Fair opens Friday Sept 15 at noon with a broad expansion of displays. County agricultural booths fill the Exhibition Building and industrial arts areas as new exhibits rise. The program features horse, dairy, range and beef cattle, junior activities, horticulture, and a new Hobby Show. Fine arts led by Mrs Virginia Howard and Home Arts head Mrs Pearl Hunsaker, with extensive entertainment including Holiday on Ice, two daily Parade of Champions, horse pulling, midair stunt group, a free thrill act, and multiple bands. Tickets quickly selling out for opening night.

Mrs Nielsen Named State Fair Home Arts Chairman

Morning Judge Cases in Justice Koch Court

In the past week Donald Olmstead of Milford was fined 3 dollars for reckless driving. Joseph R. Murdock will serve as Milford's justice of the peace while Koch is idle. Charles D. Bingham, son of Mr and Mrs F A Bingham, must report to Fort Ord California on Sept 7 after leaving Milford Sept 2 to visit friends in Salt Lake and Ogden en route. Mr and Mrs Ben Briscoe returned Tuesday from a two week visit with their children in Reno Nevada and Southern California.

Milford voters will mark ballots next Tuesday at polling places District 1 Old Library Building and District 2 former Dr Busch offices across from Milford State Bank. Polls open from 7am to 5pm.

Milford LDS Youths Enjoy Hayride and Corn Roast Outing

The combined Summer Mutual program of Milford LDS wards held a hayride and corn roast last Tuesday evening. About 40 youths rode in hay wagons drawn by horses to Mrs. Guy Whittaker’s home six miles from town. Gerald Schow played accordion as Gael Elmer led a community sing around a large fire after corn was roasted, and the group returned home under a full harvest moon. The event ended with plans to repeat the outing next year.

Dorcas Society to Feature Scotch Raisin Bread Sale

The Milford Methodist Dorcas Society plans a Saturday sale at Jefferson Mercantile Co starting at 10 30 a m featuring Scotch Raisin Bread from a famous recipe. A limited number of loaves will be offered and the menu is printed on the Milford News back page.

Three World Speed Records Targeted on Bonneville Flats

Labor Day at Bonneville Salt Flats will see attempts on three kinds of records. Jimmy Jackson aims for six international diesel car marks aboard Cummins Diesel Special No. 61, Roland R Free seeks a one mile motorcycle world record, and Ab Jenkins will push his own long distance automobile marks aboard the Mormon Meteor II. The event is sponsored by General Petroleum Corp. and the Bonneville Speedways Assn. Located 120 miles west of Salt Lake City, the salt flats host the famed race venue noted for its vast 20 by 15 mile racing area and history of world speed feats from 1930s onward.

Beaver County sheriff hopeful Leon Williams profile

Leon Williams a Milford native born in 1922 seeks the Democratic nomination for county sheriff. A Navy demolition expert and Marine veteran, he earned a Presidential Unit Citation and six theater ribbons. Since 1947 he has been Milford city marshal and attended FBI training schools. Ernest G Joseph, Beaver County Commissioner, seeks the Republican nomination for State Representative. Joseph, born 1898, is a WWI veteran and longtime farmer who has served on Beaver City Council and as Beaver County commissioner since 1938, backing Highway 21 West and the Bone Hollow road project.
