Farmers inspect Milford Valley crops for diversification and pest control

Dr Fisher and a U S D A team toured the Milford and Beaver valleys detailing diversification needs in corn and grains and warning that alfalfa monoculture reduces yields. They noted alfalfa stands thick with dandelions and urged breaking fields for grain, plus annual rotation and pest management for cutworms grasshoppers and false chinch bugs.

Commissioners Set Tax Levy for 1930

Beaver County Commissioners at a regular meeting in August 1938 set the 1930 levy totals for several funds and towns. The record lists specific mills for bonds, water works, sidewalk, contingency, general state purposes, and school support, with three town totals: Minersville Milford Beaver. The note also mentions a 15 percent reduction ordered by the state board of equalization on sheep assessments.

Beaver Boy Held On Forgery Charge

Deputy Sheriff Ted Kronholm of Milford captured Aubry Patterson of Beaver and jailed him on forgery charges. Patterson allegedly forged his father’s name to pass a check at the Gem Pool Hall in Beaver and later used another check at Bennett Swindlehurst’s service station while at liberty. Authorities believe he intended to flee when arrested.

Cottrell Family Visit In Milford From Provo And Palo Alto

Mr and Mrs W F Cottrell longtime Milford residents now in Provo visited their son Roy and daughters Mrs Tribole and Mrs Lee Gray last week They were joined by son W Fred Cottrell who drove in from Palo Alto on Saturday The family will stay a week to visit friends and relatives

Methodist Church Elects New Officers

At the August meeting of the board of Milford Methodist Church officers for the ensuing term were elected. Mrs Ray Coleman was named superintendent of Sunday school. Aston Smith was elected World Service Treasurer. Joseph Tribole became Treasurer and Mary Roper was re elected Secretary.

Milford Scout outing at Merchants valley in Beaver canyon

Milford Troop 6 Boy Scouts camped in Beaver canyon from Milford Lions club sponsorship. Patrols led by Vince Skinner Carlos Cope land Jack Hanlon and Bud Hutchins received 40 points for nearest camp. Drill on colors, campfire program, and a fishing trip marked the week with visits from the Hanlon and Copeland families. Camp name chosen as Camp Linger Longer.

Beaver County Fair set for September 11 12 13

The fifth annual Beaver County Fair will run Thursday through Saturday September 11 12 13 in Beaver. No rodeo this year but daily entertainments expand. Premiums rise fifty percent for livestock, poultry and all exhibits to attract larger displays. Geo P Low named general supervisor to recruit exhibitors and ensure care of livestock. Dynamometer pulling contest expands to two days with ball races among Beaver Milford and Cedar City for a substantial purse. Special attractions are being negotiated for thrills and amusements. Begin preparing exhibits. premium list to be released soon.

Motorcycle Crash Injures Girl on Frisco Road

Cecil Killam, Audrey Raines, and Alice Kerr from GARRISON rode a motorcycle on Frisco road Tuesday. A rut caused the bike to tip, injuring Audrey who suffered a deep knee gash and ankle cut. She was taken to hospital and then home on crutches. Cecil and Alice escaped serious harm. Mrs. Mary Alston Allen of San Francisco visited Milford Red Cross, while F J Fullmer of Salt Lake City spent a week in Milford. J F Affleck’s wife gave birth recently, and nurse Myrtle Coltharp from Amarillo visited as a Red Cross nurse earlier.

Legion Delegates Off to Convention Milford Post Sends Delegates

The Milford Post No 16 of the American Legion will send delegates Leonard Bowen LeRoy C Luken and Theodore Kranholm to the State Convention in Provo on August 7 8 and 9. The American Legion Auxiliary will be represented by Marie Lewis and Ethel Neilsen. About five hundred small bean bags made by the Auxiliary will accompany the delegates as banquet souvenirs bearing the inscription Comliments of the Milford Post No 16 of the American Legion Milford Utah. Bean bags were raised by Walter Weber who pioneered bean farming in Milford valley.

Jefferson Mercantile Co Buys Miller Stock

The Jefferson Mercantile Co bought the Miller Market stock last Friday from the receiver of the credit company. Daily sales of certain goods attract many patrons as a large truckload of stock is moved to Jefferson Mercantile for sale until the entire stock is exhausted.

Milford Student Rises to Sociology Professorship at Miami U

W. Fred Cottrell, Milford High School graduate of 1920, has been named assistant professor of Sociology and Government at Miami University Oxford Ohio. He earned a BA from Occidental College 1929 and master’s and PhD from Stanford. Cottrell credits Milford schooling for his success and will depart Milford soon to begin duties.

Fishing trip to Mammoth via Zion and Mount Carmel

A party led by W F Cottrell Sr W F Cottrell Jr Roy Cottrell and Joseph Tribole left Wednesday morning for a three day fishing trip to Mammoth via Zion can yon and Mount Carmel. The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary held an enjoyable evening in Minersville on Monday August 4 hosted by Minersville Legion Auxiliary members with games dancing and refreshments for about fifty at midnight. Jer R Murdock Jr completes a new slaughter house with concrete floor four foot walls fly proof and sanitary design this week in a newly remodeled building. Roy T Cowan visited Milford this week.

Giant airliner lands at Milford on storm path

A large Western Airways Express Fokker carrying passengers halted at Milford after a weathered flight from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. Pilots Wm Schaffer and L D Carlson guided the plane to Milford for weather relief. Passengers included Night Pilot Jimmie Carson and family. Navy planes also stopped briefly at Milford airport over the weekend.

Party at the Cedars for Milford couple hosts bonfire

A Monday evening party at the Cedars celebrated Mr. and Mrs. W F Cottrell of Provo and Milford residents. Attendees included Rev Homer Root and his mother Ida Root, Mrs Vena Wilson, Mr and Mrs Joseph Tribole, Mr and Mrs Roy Cottrell, Mr and Mrs W F Cottrell, and Mr and Mrs Lee Gray. The gathering concluded with a large bonfire and cooked supper.

Mrs. James Clay hosted the WW Club with nine members and one guest. needlework dominated an evening. Dinner bridge followed by Mrs. Merrill Miller hosting with several ladies and guests from Black Rock. garden flowers and crystal centerpieces noted. Saturday bridge at Mrs. W. C. Cates's home featured fall arrangements and prize winners. A birthday party for Daniel Blair’s 4th birthday was hosted by Mrs. K B R Coon with games and gifts. Miss Dorothy Tanner wed Vaness Anderson of Los Angeles in Beaver. they plan to live in California. Beaver fish hatchery adds two concrete rearing ponds to raise thousands of fish. State game farm shipped 150 half grown pheasants to Beaver County, prompting hopes for a future open season as birds spread along Beaver bottoms.

Gold Diggers of Broadway headliner Winnie Lightner in technicolor debut

Winnie Lightner, famed tomboy star, headlines the all color talking musical comedy Gold Diggers of Broadway at the Victory Theatre on Sunday. The Technicolor feature from Warner Bros. and Vitaphone promises singing, dancing, and a lively chorus as Lightner rises as a film star.
