Washington May 3 The Liberty Loan total rose to 2 835 000 000 with partial returns from yesterday as the Chicago district neared the top. Indications show most western states have subscribed their quotas and Boston New England exceeded its allotment at 202 000. New York neared its 900 000 000 minimum while Middletown expected to surpass its quota by week’s end. The 100 percent commitment spreads through O W shops and railroad depots with substantial hotel and municipal support.

Nelson A. Gibbs 22 of Monticello died in Norfolk Virginia after being taken ill at camp. He enlisted June 5, 1917 in the navy. Remains reached Monticello Wednesday and the funeral was held at 1 oclock this afternoon.

Buckout Faces Perjury Charge Over Damages Suit
Charles B Buckout of this city was arrested on a perjury warrant issued by Police Justice Chappell. He was arraigned and pleaded for examination set for next Tuesday. The charge stems from testimony in a 1947 Erie Railroad derailment case claiming lost earnings and injuries from a 1916 derailment near Hariman. Buckout claimed to be a Painted Post Lumber Co salesman earning 1500 a year, allegedly to enlarge damages. Charges are from Erie detectives and depositions by Watts Oakes Bright and Willam Clark. George Loretta of Port Jervis was fined 190 dollars or 140 days in Goshen jail after pleading guilty to assault in the third degree for striking Miss Henrietta Ryerson in the nose on Monday night. Loretta, a brakeman for the Erie Railroad, was arrested by Port Jervis and Middletown police with help from Erie officials. He lives with his wife in Port Jervis.
