He died instantly and coroner George H Rackett ruled it an accident after an inquest in Middletown. The body was removed to Middletown. his mother was notified. They left Middletown at 6:40 pm intending to entrain for the Indianapolis camp. Since leaving Middletown the militiamen have been stationed in the 71st Regiment Armory in New York City.

A mysterious vessel believed to be the German raider Seedler was seen about five miles east of the northern Florida coast on June 25 by a steamer crew that reached an American port from San Juan Porto Rico.
