Washington reports Germany used chlorine and phosphene gas shells against Pershing’s troops in the first gas attack seen in the U S sector. The War Department notes gas masks and training are being expanded, with over 2030000 dollars spent on masks and protective gear.
Cook George C Herman of Company F 107th Infantry at Camp Worth Spartanburg South Carolina is son of Mr and Mrs Henry Herman of 9 Grand Avenue. He enlisted June 16 1876 after turning 18. He attends Grace Episcopal Church and has long served with the Boy Scouts. On Feb 19 he and Archibald Bronimous became company cooks. He previously worked in Adolph Suds store.
Supporters of the plan withdraw the proposal to open East Main Street to Orchard Street as a public direct. The Wednesday evening Common Council hearing drew a crowded chamber with remonstrances from First Congregational Church members, teachers, and merchants. Mayor Cox announced the withdrawal and closed the matter, denying the application, while noting public interest in city affairs.
Martial law may be required in parts of Ireland as crime rises. A band of six robs bank manager and companion of £5000 on the way to a cattle fair at Winnenora. In Castle Fergus near Ennis a mob in uniform drove cattle from farms, stampeding responders. Police fired as rioters threatened Barracks, wounding several. Two constables shot near Ennistymon. rifles seized from guards at Barrimore. masked men attacked constables and robbed rifles during the melee.
Mayor Cox has named a local committee to advise on health issues affecting young men draft eligibility. The committee includes Charles E. Greason A. E. Rugitus and Dr H S DeWitt and has been sent to Washington for briefing and instructions from the National Council of Defense.
Kingston February 28 District Attorney Traver reported the court of appeals affirmed the judgment of conviction against former City Treasurer Frank M. Borce Jr. for grand larceny in the first degree. He is sentenced to Clinton state prison at Dannemora for a maximum of four years six months and a minimum of two years.
Peter Cantline of Newburgh the Police Magistrate says the city should have a dry period to test liquor traffic. He argues stopping liquor sales will reduce crime and distress, while a fair trial could lead to returning to sale if proven better for the community.
Walden resident Bilsworth VanBuren aged 30 was killed at 7 PM near Orange Farm while the Leigh & Hudson train struck him. His body lay beside the tracks as investigators locate relatives. Known as a wanderer with ties to Goshen and Durlandville, he often stayed at the county almshouse. The health officer notes limited details. continued on page eight.
Associated Press report from Madrid notes official confirmation of the torpedoing of the Spanish ship Sarniero. It follows word that the steamer Neguri was torpedoed, marking a fifth Spanish vessel sunk or damaged in as many weeks. Paris reports few French vessels over sixteen hundred tons sunk. Rome notes Italian vessels avoided German submarines and mines for the week.
Ralph G Stothers an electrician from Godeffroy Deerpark ... died in Texas after a brief illness while serving in the 11th Aero Squadron. He was the first Deerpark settler to die in the war, born February 11, 18.., son of Jacob and Clira Stothers, survived by his parents and sister Sarah Esther. He enlisted to aid his country and served with duty and honor.
Thomas M. Lynch of the Treasury Department Internal Revenue Service has left Middletown for home after weeks at the city hall trading people on the income tax. He will soon proceed from Poughkeepsie to New Haven to resume regular work and told a Times Press representative that tax returns may be sent to Albany up to April 1.
Washington February 28 The Agriculture Department reports porkless Saturdays are reducing pork supplies and increasing cold storage holdings across all classes in January.
British forces night raid German trenches on Greenland Hill north of the Scarpe river. Artillery on both sides active east of Ypres as the war office reports ongoing shelling and combat in the sector.
The Fuel Administration lifted bituminous coal prices in the Tug River district of West Virginia and the upper Cinch district of Virginia. A coast wise freighter ran aground at Atlantic Port on February 28, appearing to rest on a ledge.
Secretary G D Theleen of Middletown Chamber of Commerce reads a statement demanding a public apology from the writer of a missive that attacked him and others. The board meeting on January 26 discussed a proposed new street project from East Main Street to Orchards paralleling North Street and resolved to rescind past actions to avoid further strife among citizens.
