In a dense fog a freight train carrying relief supplies crashed into the rear of the Mercantile Express No. 6 near Mount Union Pennsylvania. Eighteen bodies were recovered and the death toll was expected to reach twenty. The Bellewood rear coach was destroyed and all aboard perished, including the family of Chester A Minds a former Penn athlete and coal dealer from Ramer.
