Patriotism dominated the Orange County Society dinner at the Hotel Biltmore New York last Saturday night with over 300 guests. Governor Charles S Whitman Supreme Court Justice Arthur Tompkins and visitors from the Allies urged unity in the war effort.

Big Auto Fire Engine Stranded in Snow Overnight

The McQuoid automobile fire engine, started in the snow on Lil ue avenue last night, could not be moved from its entanglement in snow this morning. After two heavy seams with tackle were attached, Chief Hisham remained at the scene until 2 am, with assistant Chief Echoonmaker taking charge thereafter. C. E. Board to consider appointment of charity commissioner

Water shortage blamed for Port Jervis High blaze

A February Port Jervis fire gutted the high school top floor, with estimates placing losses at about $30,000. Officials cited water shortage and frozen hydrants as key factors, noting no wind allowed adjacent property to be spared. Firefighters saved parts of the second floor, the Dutch Reformed Church nearby was scorched, and many books and records from the commercial department were rescued. The school board planned rebuilding and may repurpose grammar schools for classes.

John Knell Dies In Home Sunday

John Knell senior partner of I G Knell grocery and delicatessen at 12 East Main street died suddenly at his home 11 Creaceni Place Sunday morning at age 71. Born in Milwaukee on July 4, 1864, he lived in this city five years, married in New York City, survived by wife son George daughter Marie a daughter in law Mrs Geo Knell three brothers and two grandchildren. He was a Masonic Lodge member and funeral services led by Rev S Smithers Jr will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at the late home with Hoffman Lodge pallbearers to be chosen.

Army Inductions Continue as Local Exemption Board Plans February 15 Exits

Registrants for military service are examined at City Hall with a Saturday session and another on Wednesday. About 28 more men are slated to depart around February 15 likely to Camp Dix Wrightstown New Jersey. Medical Advisory Board No 5 met Saturday with eight examinations from Division No 3 city. The board meets Wednesdays and Saturdays weekly. Fire companies announce their annual meeting this evening.

A World War I dispatch notes that American artillery fire damaged German trenches more than American lines, requiring nights of work under fire to repair first line positions saved by US 75mm shells and breached barbed wire. Blame for Halifax Tragedy Blamed on British Pilot and French Captain

Report by the government collision commission finds that Captain LaMedee of the French ship and Pilot Mackay of Halifax violated seafaring rules in the Monte Blanc Imo disaster. It recommends canceling LaMedee license and pursuing charges. Mackay detained on manslaughter charges with license cancellation urged. Also notes Tuxedo Horse Show dates set for June 1922 to benefit the American Red Cross in the wealthy colony.
