In Madrid dawn executions ended a high profile case. Five men including two Basques were shot after appeals were denied by Gen. Francisco Franco. Protests erupted across Western Europe with Basques and FRAP members among the condemned.
OPEC members agreed to raise the oil benchmark from $10.46 to $11.51 per barrel and freeze the price for at least nine months. The move, not formally announced by OPEC, aims to curb inflation but will likely lift gasoline costs globally, with US and European markets feeling the impact.
Ohio voters face a near million dollar media campaign this week backing Gov. James A. Rhodes four constitutional amendments amid Democratic opposition. Keith McNamara, Columbus, leads Ohioans for Jobs and Progress. Democrats call the package a cruel hoax while citing a 2009 payoff for projects and long term costs. Celeste accuses Rhodes of nonsense as unemployment rises to 8.9 percent.**
An Argentine four engine CLA4 turboprop failed on takeoff at Miami International Airport, bursting into flames and killing six. Seven people were injured, including three who watched the doomed takeoff from a nearby van as flaming debris set it ablaze. Officials said the pilot tried to abort but clipped a light, then crossed a fence and struck a canal embankment.
Gov James A Rhodes faces a broad slate of cost control recommendations from a volunteer council. Proposals include raising liquor prices, eliminating free carnival rides at the state fair, shifting to a single license plate, centralizing registrars for plates, raising license records fees, expanding park revenues, closing four state mental hospitals, and taking full welfare operation from counties. The panel says 590 ideas could save 216 million annually and generate 48.5 million in new yearly revenue.
