Senate House conferees approve a rider restricting HEW use of funds to enforce desegregation guidelines. The measure targets busing and school closings, citing parental wishes, and may shift focus to Northern districts for up to a year. Officials warn it could limit federal pressure on Southern integration.
The Ohio AFL-CIO COPE endorsed Democrat John J. Gilligan for the U.S. Senate seat, pledging thousands of dollars to his campaign. COPE also backed 106 other state and district candidates, with mixed Republican and Democrat support, and endorsed two candidates in the 89th House district.
American B52 bombers dropped nearly four million pounds of bombs Friday and today on hostile positions near Cambodia to blunt three enemy attempts to overrun border posts. In the north, the enemy shelled a Special Forces camp at Thuong Duc and two militia out posts, with two Vietnamese defenders killed and 11 wounded. A 24 year old Japanese housewife Mrs Masataka Sato gave birth to quadruplets on Friday. Three boys and one girl weighed 2 and 2 ½ pounds each. One baby died shortly after delivery and the other died the following morning. The two survivors were reported to be in incubators and doing fine.
Mexico City faces a fresh hurdle as student strike leaders vow to keep protest going until demands are met. About 5 000 protesters rallied Friday while talks with university officials failed to resolve the two month old strike. The government risks severe actions to preserve order for the October 12 Olympic opening. No athletes or Olympic village incidents have occurred.

A committee of lawyers newsmen and a private detective faced contempt charges for prejudicial statements tied to the Ray case. Hanes accused prejudice of showing in court. Hearing continued to Monday.
