President Nixon ordered a rapid retail price hike as officials warned of a possible national closedown if controls remain. John Huemmrich of the National Congress of Petroleum Retailers called one cent or two cent increases insufficient.
Former United Mine Workers president W A Tony Boyle remained in a coma and extremely unstable in a Washington hospital after a possible stroke. He was 71 and had been rushed from his home to George Washington University Hospital where he lay in the ICU awaiting further examination as a federal magistrate prepared a hearing on his removal to Pennsylvania for murder charges in the 1969 Yablonski killings.
Rain chances persist tonight and tomorrow with lows around 68 and highs near 82. Middletown reports a 86 degree high yesterday and a 60 degree low this morning.
