President Ford says he will not cower before would be assassins and will continue his campaign travels. Congressional fears and a security breach prompt calls to curtail his public appearances, but Ford returns to the White House and rejects capitulation to violence.
Hurricane Eloise smashed ashore between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City causing tornadoes and extensive damage along a 40 mile corridor. Trees and power lines fell, wide outages followed, U S 98 flooded, Port St Joe evacuated. no injuries reported immediately while crews fought a fire in Lana City and residents fled inland.
A sheriff's dispatcher in Panama City notes cool cloudy conditions persist in southwestern Ohio with a 50 percent rain chance tonight and 40 percent tomorrow. Lows near 50 tonight, highs in the low 60s tomorrow. Residents flee beaches for shelters or higher ground as the same pattern extends east and west along the Gulf Coast.
Alma Knepshield, a 60 year old Middletown High School secretary, was fatally stung by about 50 yellow jackets while mowing her lawn at 5587 Hendrickson Road east of Middletown. Her husband Howard Knepshield, 65, had been working nearby on a tractor before returning to the front yard.
A 45 year old San Francisco mother Sara Jane Moore faced a sanity hearing after firing a .38 revolver at President Ford as he left the St Francis Hotel. A Marine veteran Oliver Sipple deflected the shot and Ford was unharmed. Moore was arraigned on a federal charge of attempting to assassinate the President and held on 500000 bond.
Mrs. Knepshield died at 6:45 p.m. from wasp stings found on her ankles after insects swarmed from a ground hole near a mower. Det. Cole found roughly 50 dead wasps around the scene at Middletown High School. Funeral services set for Thursday at Wilson Schramm Memorial Home. memorials to Red Lion Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, son Jan, former fire chief James Mattson, a sister, and two grandchildren. Burial in Woodhill Cemetery, Franklin. no visitations.
Sara Moore a 45 year old bookkeeper known as Sally was linked to radical groups while secretly working as an FBI informant from 1974 to 1975. She was arrested for firing at President Ford and later revealed to have fed details to underground presses provoking mixed reactions from fellow activists and law enforcement.
