Price jump sharpest in 28 years in August report

Washington AP reports consumer prices rose 1.8 percent in August, the steepest monthly gain in 26 years. Food prices led the surge, with the largest one month rise since 1917. unadjusted index up 1.8 percent and seasonally adjusted up 1.9 percent.

One Killed in Shootout After Bank Robbery Becomes Manhunt

FBI agents and Butler County police pursued a possible fourth suspect in a $25,000 Home Federal Savings & Loan robbery at Pisgah. Lionel Stewart, 23, of Columbus, was killed after a high speed chase and shootout near a motel behind Howard Johnson's. Two others remained jailed on multiple counts as authorities recovered most of the stolen cash.

Singer Jim Croce Dies in Air Crash Near Natchitoches

Recording star Jim Croce was killed with five others in a plane crash near Natchitoches municipal airport after performing at Northwestern State University. Sheriff Sam James said Dallas pilot Robert N Elliott led the twin engine charter flight, which went down about 10:45 pm near the runway end after clipping a tree.
