CAPE CANAVERAL Florida AP The Air Force launched the Blue Scout rocket to hurl a 32.8 pound radiation study payload 16 400 miles into space. All four stages ignited on time and signals from the payload were received as it continued its ascent. If successful the mission would place the payload about 16 600 miles from Earth before a 3 1 2 hour descent ending over the south Atlantic southeast of Cape Canaveral. Lt Col Donald A Stine said the test focused on the rocket itself with the payload as a secondary objective.
