Buenos Aires dispatch reports a rebel radio call urging the insurgent navy to halt the escape of President Juan D. Peron. The message claims he is fleeing to Asuncion Paraguay aboard a gunboat named Humajta.
The new Argentine junta began peace talks with rebel forces after Peron fled the country amid a four day revolt. The army pledged normal government operations while CGT threats and possible strikes drew concern in Buenos Aires.
Hurricane Ione moves east of the coast with warnings reduced from Cape Ann to Eastport Maine. Forecasters warn the storm could still intensify as it travels over warm Atlantic waters, with 60 to 70 mph winds near the center and northward gale gusts. North Carolina reports heavy rain and widespread damage. several towns suffer structural losses and fatalities.
Coastal North Carolina faced at least five deaths and widespread damage as Ione, the third storm this year, flooded towns from New Bern to Morehead City. Damaged roads, power failures, and isolated communities hinder estimates while Gov Hodges sought federal relief.

Miller Construction Co. of Cincinnati submitted the lowest of eight bids for the city’s sewage treatment plant on Oxford State Road at 1,192,000 dollars. The bid beat Miller Thompson Co. of Detroit, the prior low bid of 1,203,000 dollars, which was upheld in Common Pleas Court but faced an appeal. The bid results will be reviewed by the City Commission tomorrow night.
Butler County Common Pleas Court heard an injunction plea filed this afternoon by attorney William Hendrickson for Caroline W. Murphy Jack Slifer Effie H. Baird and Richard Bendel. The suit seeks to enjoin Middletown City Commission clerk from presenting the annexation report to the commission citing errors and irregularities in the proceedings especially regarding farm land in the area to be annexed.
Charlotte dispatch reports Vicki the elephant roams six miles from downtown as veteran handler Louie Reed tries to coax her home with baby talk. Reed suspects amateur hunters spooked the Indian elephant missing from Partlow’s amusement park for ten days. bait fails to lure her.
In San Francisco, nearly 300 policemen searched a 66 block area for Dr. Sanford Marcus's 3 day old son Robert J. Marcus snatched from Mt Zion Hospital. A nurse described the kidnapper as a tall untidy blonde woman. Dr Marcus pleaded for the baby's safe return and the hospital offered a $1000 reward as the parents grieve.
An off duty police detective Walter Hart, 48, was shot dead in downtown Cincinnati while stopping a tavern robbery. He wounded one gunman, and police captured the wounded suspect within minutes followed by the second man as he fled toward Kentucky.
The 61 year old Michigan Democrat John Dingell died unexpectedly at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after a checkup for an asthmatic condition. A heart attack is cited as the likely cause. Dingell had served Detroit’s 15th District since 1932 and was a long time Ways and Means Committee member.
Hatchel Creech a 33 year old Dayton cabinet maker stands trial for first degree murder in the fatal July 9 shooting of his estranged wife Delores 26 at a local restaurant. Three judges preside as Creech waived a jury trial and the case opens.
About 15 000 people were homeless in Tampico after Hurricane Hilda battered the Gulf port. At least 12 dead and 350 injured as 90 percent of Tampico’s buildings were damaged. Emergency declared, army to requisition aid, and international help sought to restore water and supply needs.
LOS ANGELES A 40 year old machinist Francis McMullan walked into a bank and demanded $50,000 cash with a hoax bomb in a briefcase. He was blocked by the vault grill and held on suspicion of bank robbery claiming he needed funds for “rest” after years of poverty.
Mary Ott 33 of Curtice was killed when struck by a car on Ohio 53 near the Ottawa Wood County line in PORT CLINTON. Ohio Highway Patrol reported the fatal crash occurred last night.
Cool air flows in from the north ending a multi day heat spell in the Miami Valley. Forecasters expect cloudy and cooler conditions today tonight and Wednesday with scattered showers possible. Highs reach the 80s and overnight lows in the 60s. An unofficial Monday high was 95 and the morning low 68.

Dayton Ohio. David Scott Sargent three year old son of Mr and Mrs Vernon Sargent burned to death yesterday in a fire that destroyed the Sargent home northwest of Dayton. The parents and two other children escaped. Sheriff deputies said cause of the fire has not been determined.
Gov Frank J Lausche commuted the death sentence of Benjamin Meyer to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife Velvia on February 15 1954. Meyer 26 was sentenced to die by electrocution last August 25 and received a reprieve to allow case review. Under Ohio law first degree murderers with life terms may have a Pardon and Parole Commission hearing after 20 years and parole consideration follows a commutation.
Harvey John Collins a 29 year old convicted murderer who escaped from Pierce County Jail with six others surrendered to Sheriff Harold Bird. The capture left four fugitives in custody or at large and Collins admitted additional killings including the Samurai sword murder of a Tacoma motel operator and two other slayings in Kentucky.
