In Peiping the defense minister Peng Teh-huai was relieved of duty and Marshal Lin Piao named his replacement. Lin, aged 52, had led Chinese volunteers at the start of the Korean War. Peng had taken command in Korea in October 1950. The broadcast cited no reason for the reshuffle. Other military changes included Huang Ke-cheng being replaced by Nieh Jung-chen and Public Security Minister Lo Jui-ching being replaced by Hsieh Fu-chi.
