Gov. Michael V. DiSalle delivered an emotion filled speech at the Ohio Democratic Convention opener. He attacked racial issues and national politcs while praising state gains including higher funding for schools and universities, aged aid reform, and a civil rights law. Delegates cheered as he urged progress and unity.
Dolores Ruslow has been in a coma for five years after a 1955 New York Thruway crash. Her husband Larry, 31, notes she remains otherwise healthy, with only occasional eyelid and lip twitching. Doctors call her a medical oddity as brain operations failed. The family lives in Gloversville, Mohawk Valley, near Ellis Hospital and Littauer.

Poling says Peale did not write or authorize the resolutions but disputes how his name was attached. The Times cited a telephone confirmation, while Peale’s comment was not directly reached.
Dr Poling attacks theologians Reinhold Niebuhr and John Bennett and others in the Liberal party over a Washington statement questioning a Catholic's independence as president. Dr Peale resigns from the conference saying he had no involvement.
The State Department hints it may lift travel restrictions enough for Khrushchev to visit the Glen Cove estate on Long Island during the United Nations General Assembly, with strict limits on activities and no receptions. Security plans at the U.N. are tightened as police deploy about a third of the force and delegates are advised guns will be banned.
