Senate committee rejects Bush overtime rules in clash

The Senate Appropriations Committee blocked Bush overtime changes by 16 to 13, with two Republicans joining Democrats. The measure, added to a labor health education spending bill, would require overtime pay for many workers up to $23,660 and was opposed by White House officials who vow a veto if it remains. The debate centers on whether about 6 million workers would lose or gain overtime eligibility under the rules.

Parishioners’ suit sought an injunction to stop selling church assets, but the court found no state role in church matters. The sit-in and around the clock prayer vigil continued as archdiocese officials aim to end the occupation.
