Navy suffers heavy losses in Mekong delta fighting

A two day battle ends with 70 Viet Cong dead and nine U.S. sailors killed as Navy gunboats and landing craft engage Viet Cong forces along the Rach Ba River. The 2,000 man river assault force suffers 104 wounded while the 263rd Viet Cong battalion disperses into marshes 45 miles south of Saigon.

Hurricane Donia drives toward the Virginia Maryland and Delaware coasts with 50 to 60 mph winds and 5 to 6 foot tides. The storm slows to 10 mph and is expected to hit the Eastern Shore at noon. The Red Cross reports 2500 evacuees in 30 shelters across New Jersey Delaware Maryland and Virginia. Coast Guard and state rescue units stand by amid evacuations.

Marine Returns to Cincinnati in Slaying Case

A 17 year old Marine from Fairfax confessed to authorities on the West Coast that he and an accomplice killed two missing 9 year old boys, John Hundley and James McQueary, burying their bodies in a Fairfax wooded area. He waived extradition and is being returned to Cincinnati for charges. no charges filed yet. The case followed a broader weather story noting multiple hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Cairo AP Egypt's former No 2 man Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer killed himself with poison after a tribunal threat. Government reports say he attempted death by his own action Wednesday, was given poison Thursday night, and was buried in Menia, 200 miles south of Cairo.

Baldwin High Teacher Cleared Of Molestation Charge

Maurice C. McNeill a Baldwin High School biology teacher and the district’s only Black instructor was acquitted by the Board of Education. An audience of about 300 cheered as board president Henry Bang announced the verdict and McNeill was reinstated with back pay after a hearing open since August. The case stemmed from accusations by student Susan Schaffner that he touched her inappropriately in July.
