A crazed carpenter escapee, J. H. Long, held a woman hostage in Little Rock and was killed by an off duty officer after moving toward the officer’s aim while shouting for police to come. The officer fired a volley of six shots ending the standoff.

Nationalists and Reds clash on offshore islands near Quemoy

In Formosa off Taiwan the Chinese Communist and Nationalist forces briefly dueled on two tiny Tachens islands about 350 miles north of Quemoy. Red batteries on Toumen Island fired 22 shells at Yikian Island. Nationalists returned fire and Red guns fell quiet. Nationalist air and naval forces pounded Red positions along the Formosan mainland coast opposite Quemoy for the 14th straight day.

Sheppard Gets Wife's Possessions

Marilyn Sheppard named her husband Dr Samuel H Sheppard as executor and heir to possessions valued at 9100 dollars. The will dated February 28 was filed in probate court days after she was bludgeoned to death in July. Dr Sheppard, jailed on a first degree murder charge, has claimed an intruder killed his wife and a bail hearing moved to Friday.

Antioch College probe yields little conclusive subversion evidence

A three member House committee report found no conclusive proof of anti American subversion at Antioch College after a three day hearing in Dayton Ohio. Witnesses testified about study groups linked to the Communist Party but said they had since left the movement. The testimony spotlighted Antioch faculty and students including Robert M Metcalf and the Ober couple with links to the Young Communist League and the United Electrical Workers Union. Some witnesses invoked Fifth Amendment protections.
