Munich police said a report of shots at the Olympic Village before the 20th games was a false alarm. Detectives found no bullets or evidence of firing after a nightlong search with dogs. Police had rushed reinforcements fearing a repeat of Tuesday’s attack that left 11 Israelis, five Arabs and one police officer dead.
A gunman wounded Israeli diplomat Zakok Ophir in a Brussels cafe, five bullets to liver, ear, and shoulder. He was operated on and remains in danger. The assailant fled as Belgian police hunted him. A separate Munich report said five shots were fired near the Moroccan quarter with no casualties.
Explosions at Bien Hoa Air Base near Saigon damaged or destroyed 70 South Vietnamese helicopters in a single blast. The attack caused 2 Vietnamese dead, 21 wounded, and 40 U.S. personnel injured. The incident prompted revised official statements on the strike’s scope and cause.

The Swiss Cabinet rejected a Defense Ministry recommendation to buy 350 million dollars worth of Corsair fighters from the United States. The second option, the Mirage Milan from France, also failed to win approval.
The IOC decided to award Russia the basketball gold and bronze medals while withholding the silver, after considering a United States protest that claimed a late three point play gave Russia a 51 50 victory. The decision leaves open potential revocation if a formal protest is upheld.
A dynamite bomb hidden in a picnic basket exploded outside Beaver County Courthouse early today seconds after discovery by night watchman Joseph R Hardy Sr. The blast damaged the building, ripped a wall in the annex, damaged two offices and shattered windows in nearby homes.
