Postmaster General calls for doubling postal subsidy
Postmaster General Bailar for the first time endorses doubling the annual postal subsidy to 1.84 billion dollars, urging Congress to raise subsidies and rates for about three years. Lawmakers Hanley Henderson and Wilson back higher subsidies, arguing it avoids further rate hikes and service cutbacks amid rising mailing costs. Bailar notes postal revenue still underperforms costs, and a subsidy increase would bridge to solvency while inflation bites.
