In Columbus the income tax repeal drive kept its current stance as the Ohio Supreme Court declined to offer assistance. The ruling leaves organizers with the same hurdles and no added judicial support.
Jews worldwide begin the High Holy Days with Rosh Hashanah marking year 5733 on the Hebrew calendar. The 10 day period of introspection and prayer ends with Yom Kippur on Monday September 18.
The Ohio Supreme Court rejected a bid to restore 8 600 signatures from repeal petitions, leaving backers 34 414 short of the 318 414 needed to place the issue on the November ballot. Judge Brown said the decision changes nothing as backers plan to continue the effort.
Travelers in Beirut and Damascus reported a massive Israeli buildup along the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Israel conducted an eight hour raid into southern Lebanon in response to a guerrilla clash, with no major fighting or casualties reported.
Recycling efforts in Middletown move from the AAUW to the Middletown Area Recycling Center for an eight week cycle. MARC plans a permanent site soon though lease delays and a hidden location deter reveal. Volunteers sought to staff the center once opened five days a week.
FBI teams totaling about 150, including police and marshals, search rugged hills near Fountain Valley Golf Course in St. Croix for eight killed in a resort holdup. Investigators have not named the attackers but believe five to seven fled into the area. Victims include Miami tourists Richard Griffin Jr and Charles Meisinger and four others identified by Rockresorts Inc as Nick Beale Pat Tarbet and John Guilliver Jr with one more unnamed.
Forecast shows mostly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and thundershowers tonight. Lows near 60 with partial clearing and cooler tomorrow, highs around 75. Sunday also looks clear and cool.
Hurricane Dawn, with winds up to 95 mph, drifted 300 miles off Cape Hatteras and was forecast to skirt the New England coast. Forecasters urged alerts from Cape May to Cape Cod as small craft warnings spread along the Atlantic shore.
