Manila reports two more articles of a Southeast Asia security pact approved as foreign ministers from eight nations push toward a signing by Wednesday. A last sticking point is clear military commitments from the United States Britain France Australia New Zealand Thailand and the Philippines with Thailand and the Philippines seeking a mutual aid pledge.
Delegates adopted articles to align on mutual self help against armed attacks and subversive activity while Thailand dropped demands to extend subversive activity outside borders. talks also approved terms for economic cooperation and a Southeast Asia Treaty Organization council to meet as needed. France proposed protocol to include Laos Cambodia and Southern Vietnam with limited active roles.
Across six states and the nation, 360 people died in motor mishaps during the Labor Day weekend, the lowest highway death toll since 1948. Drownings reached 92 and 83 died in miscellaneous accidents, with total tolls near 535. States increased patrols to curb fatalities.
Five people were injured when an eastbound Greyhound bus crashed a guard rail, toppled an embankment, and landed on its roof near St. Clairsville Ohio. Eight were treated at Martins Ferry Hospital, three released. The bus was en route from St. Louis to New York.
Senator Flanders filed new charges accusing Senator McCarthy of covering up forgery and violating the Espionage Act. The special Senate committee probing censure disclosed the move during a recess of public hearings before going into a closed session to weigh unnamed allegations.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York will announce he will not seek a fourth term and is expected to back Sen. Irving M. Ives for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. His statewide address is set for 8 p.m. on CBS TV with radio rebroadcast at 10 15 p.m. EDT. Dewey may return to law practice in Manhattan after leaving office in December.
The U S announces a program to rotate tactical Air Force fighter-bombers and troop carrier units for temporary European tours. The move aims to test mobility, provide combat experience, and increase overall air strength in Europe, with several wings already based in England and the continent.
Miami forecast centers warned a hurricane alert for south Florida was likely as an Atlantic tropical storm strengthened to about 85 mph. Weather chief Grady Norton said a hurricane hunter plane had flown into the storm and full data would determine the alert decision. The system was 500 miles east-southeast of Miami and moving west-northwest at 12 mph, with the center near Watling Island in the Bahamas.
In Butler County Ohio a hearing on an injunction request to halt the Lemon Township School District merger into Middletown was continued by Judge Fred B. Cramer. Victor Simpson argued the map was in error and sought to stop transfer of funds. Testimony by Gordon Smith and Hugh Butler confirmed the map. a portion of Warren County may be involved but no map exists for that area. About 25 people attended.
Governor Byrnes names Charles E. Daniel of Greenville to the U S Senate to serve out the Maybank term ending January 2. Maybank died of a heart attack last Wednesday. Edgar A. Brown is chosen as Democratic nominee for the full term in a traditionally Democratic state.
Violet Fuchs a former WAC from Middletown CT enters Miss America pageant scene claiming title to Miss Connecticut. Officials revoke badge, Violet protests while picketing in sun, collapses, revived by police, later to continue demonstration. Dorothy Anne Hopkins of Storrs is recognized as Miss Connecticut by CT Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Bud Fisher age 69 died at Roosevelt Hospital New York from cancer. Born Harry Conway Fisher in Chicago on April 3 1885 he launched the Mutt and Jeff strip for the San Francisco Chronicle in 1907 and later drew for William Randolph Hearst. He first pursued prize fighting before turning to art and cartooning.
Nationalist warplanes struck Communist shipping along the China coast. The Defense Ministry said a Red gunboat and over 100 wooden junks plus five motorized vessels were damaged. Warships joined in the attack near Amoy Quemoy and Wuvu Island with Amoy base fire crippled. All planes returned safely.
At Cox Municipal Airport near Vandalia more than 200000 spectators attended National Aircraft Show events. A jet pilot shattered a world speed record and was killed two days later while preparing to repeat the feat. Three other new speed marks were set in Thompson, Allison and Bendix events, with 1955 show planned for Fort Worth Texas.
The United States brings the Siberia air incident to the United Nations Security Council. Navy Neptune bomber shot down by Soviet jets near Vladivostok tests U.S. protest and survivor accounts. Recovery reports place crash 12 miles southeast of Vladivostok with nine crew saved.
