Harrisburg AP reports Stanley Metzger five on his first day of school was run over by a car returning home from a grocery trip. An off duty policeman’s tire passed over his arm, yet the boy remained eager to return to class.
A twin engine Lockheed Lodestar owned by Ashland Oil crashed on a farm near Ravenna Ohio killing 13 aboard. Executives from Frontier Oil Allied Oil and Ashland Oil were traveling to Ashland Kentucky for a sales meeting. No survivors. Witnesses described engine trouble and a high orange flame explosion.
President Kennedy says the United States will take whatever means may be necessary to prevent Cuba from turning Soviet arms against the Western Hemisphere. He cites shipments of antiaircraft missiles torpedo boats and thousands of Soviet technicians, but finds no evidence of an organized Cuban combat force or offensive bases.
Temperatures average six degrees below normal through Monday as the five day outlook shows highs near 76 and lows around 54. In Algiers, Deputy Premier Ahmed Ben Bella’s Political Bureau seized back power from guerrilla leaders after a short civil conflict. The Wilaya 4 command demilitarized the city and troops withdrew, while Ben Bella announced the settlement from the former French colonial government building. The bureau will govern as provisional authority, ending Wilaya interference for now.
In Pasadena AP reports Mariner 2 redirected its trajectory in a dramatic midcourse maneuver to pass within about 9 000 miles of Venus. The 447 pound craft launched from Cape Canaveral Aug 25 aims to test life detecting instruments during a planned 30 minute dec 14 flyby marking a US space milestone.
Two men aged 22 to 25 escaped from East German territory through Seehof and crossed the Teltow Canal to safety behind McNair Barracks in Berlin. An East German guard in civilian clothes also crossed. no injuries reported. West Berlin cops and Allied forces tightened crossings while MIGs shadowed Western airliners amid protests over border and transit routes.
