The Associated Press reports Americans die on highways and streets at about one every 12 minutes as Labor Day traffic nears a record, with 397 deaths logged by early hours Sunday and forecasts predicting further increases. State tallies show broad totals across all 50 states and Washington D C.
Tropical storm Gladys nears the Mexican coast within 100 miles of Texas with 50 mph winds and heavy squalls. Brownsville Weather Bureau warns of 3 to 5 foot tides and inland rain, while 7,000 to 8,000 vacationers evacuate Padre Island. Flora remains distant in the Atlantic with winds up to 90 mph.
Three Americans long held by the Soviets were handed to U S military police in Berlin. Wilfred Kumis age 39 from Amesbury Murray Fields 36 of Brooklyn NY identified as Cpl Michael Feingersch and Frederick Hopkins civilian. all are in good health but will face possible action for desertion for two soldiers.
The Weather Bureau sought a break in a five day heat wave that pushed temperatures above 100 daily, caused millions in crop damage, and tripled deaths. The county coroner reported 27 heat prostration deaths and about 200 other deaths linked to heat, with poultry and rabbit losses at three million dollars and a city heat record of 110.
Bendix Aviation Corp. workers across five plants vote on a three year contract to end a week-long strike by 20,000 CIO United Auto Workers. The deal includes wage increases, increased pensions, improved benefits, and a layoff pay plan. Ratification meetings begin at South Bend plant with other sites in Elmira Heights N Y Teterboro N J North Hollywood Calif and Detroit.
Seven Air Force jets flew from California to Pennsylvania in under four hours but uncooperative winds prevented new speed records. Col. Carlos M. Talbott won the Bendix Trophy with a 2 325 mile flight at 610.726 mph, 3 hours 48 minutes four seconds, while Maj. Leonard J. Stevens piloted a Bomber to 3 hours 57 minutes 59.2 seconds. Two crews dropped out after tire blowouts at Wichita. Radar trouble plagued Stevens’ craft before finish.
Negotiators for Ohio Bell Telephone Co and the CIO Communications Workers of America resumed talks today in Cleveland to avert a strike by about 16,000 telephone workers in Ohio. The talks focus on wages and work conditions amid a threatened walkout.

In Altadena California a dog wearing light shorts was spotted under a tree by Mode Frasure. Pasadena Animal Shelter seeks the owner of the dressed bird as it stands out in the neighborhood.
Workers at Shizuoka Bank in Hamamatsu found one million yen missing from the vault. A note left near the gate said the thief returned 200,000 yen, claiming the thief took 1,000,000 yen but felt it was too much and left part of the money. the method of entry remains unknown.
A 5.5 to 6 magnitude tremor hit northern California with San Jose bearing most damage. Walls cracked, shelves toppled, chimneys shifted, and several residents fainted though no injuries were reported. The quake was felt up to 100 miles away from Hollister to San Francisco.
A collision south of Bucyrus involved an eastbound PRR freight and a westbound Manhattan Limited. Twenty six injured were treated with five hospitalized and detours placed on PRR routes as crews identified the two train engineers and conductors.
Bellefontaine Ohio coroner Dr A J McCracken rules carbon monoxide poisoning caused the deaths of Army Pvt Carl Howell his wife Carol and their two children Debra Viola 2 and Carl Bruce 8 months. The four were found in a sealed car near the abandoned Cincinnati and Lake Erie Railroad line after being dead three or four days. A hose to the exhaust was connected to the car and the gas tank was empty. The family had last been seen Thursday at Howell's father home. Mrs Howell and the children had been living with her parents in Belle Center.
President Eisenhower plans a top secret conference with Vice President Nixon on national security issues during the Labor Day holiday period in Denver. They will discuss NSC agenda items and the Near East violence while Nixon notes no emergency.
