The 120th Ohio State Fair closes today in Columbus after 11 days of events. An estimated 143,389 people attended Sunday, bringing total attendance to 2,040,051, close to last year’s 2,040,435. Grand Ole Opry stars Tex Ritter and others performed for three hours in the grandstand.
In Gallia County Ohio three Shields men Fred P. Shields 70 Fred D. Shields 42 and Jim Shields 18 died while cleaning rattlesnakes from a 30 foot well. They had attempted to gas the snakes using exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide. The eldest entered the well first and did not emerge followed by the father and then the son. The sheriff noted lingering carbon monoxide may have caused the deaths. A 17-year-old rescuer using scuba gear retrieved the bodies and collapsed briefly.
At Burke Lakefront Airport a car veered off Memorial Shoreway into spectators leaving the air show. Five killed include Camille J. Resch and relatives from Lorain and Gary Williams from Eastlake. Driver Joseph A. Chaney Jr. was jailed with injuries. police blamed distraction by Thunderbirds overhead.
Eastern Seaboard and Midwest endure a heat wave as Labor Day weekend draws crowds to beaches and mountains. Safety officials warn of 550 to 650 deaths from highway crashes and drownings amid hot humid conditions. Labor leaders criticize national economic policy while tropical storms Delia and another system stir near the Gulf of Mexico.
AFL CIO President George Meany calls for ending wage and price controls within six months saying Nixon should face economic problems. UAW President Leonard Woodcock backs lifting controls by year end and warns of possible Chrysler overtime disputes. Meany predicts a recession by year end and growing worker militancy if costs rise.
Cambodian government reports half a mile of Highway 4 remains blocked by Khmer Rouge insurgents after Sunday battles. thirteen government troops died, APMCs destroyed or damaged, and a second clash near Kompong Kan tuok claimed about fifty Khmer Rouge. In Phnom Penh a grenade wounded two police and three shop vendors.
Omnibus Crime Control grants totaling nearly 1 million dollars were announced for 15 Ohio projects. The awards were given by Dr. David C. Sweet, director of the state Department of Economic and Community Development, with the largest grant of 172,840 dollars to continue planning the South Central Regional Juvenile Detention Center serving Ross, Pickaway, Highland, Pike, Jackson and Vinton counties.
Tropical Storm Delia is expected to reach hurricane strength by late today and likely strike the Louisiana coast on Tuesday. At 6 a.m. Delia centered about 340 miles south-southeast of New Orleans with winds near 60 mph, moving north-northwest at 10 mph. Christine was near 60 mph and near Antigua tonight.
Clear skies and 60s forecast for Midtown tonight. Sunny Tuesday with highs near 90. Extended outlook shows a chance of showers Thursday and Friday, with most days in the upper 80s to 90s and low 70s at night.
