Ohio State Fair ends with crowds and Grand Ole Opry

The 120th Ohio State Fair closes today in Columbus after 11 days of events. An estimated 143,389 people attended Sunday, bringing total attendance to 2,040,051, close to last year’s 2,040,435. Grand Ole Opry stars Tex Ritter and others performed for three hours in the grandstand.

Cleaning Snakes Out of the Well Tragedy in Ohio

In Gallia County Ohio three Shields men Fred P. Shields 70 Fred D. Shields 42 and Jim Shields 18 died while cleaning rattlesnakes from a 30 foot well. They had attempted to gas the snakes using exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide. The eldest entered the well first and did not emerge followed by the father and then the son. The sheriff noted lingering carbon monoxide may have caused the deaths. A 17-year-old rescuer using scuba gear retrieved the bodies and collapsed briefly.

Five Die as Car Crashes into Air Show Crowd

At Burke Lakefront Airport a car veered off Memorial Shoreway into spectators leaving the air show. Five killed include Camille J. Resch and relatives from Lorain and Gary Williams from Eastlake. Driver Joseph A. Chaney Jr. was jailed with injuries. police blamed distraction by Thunderbirds overhead.

Ohio crime grants fund regional projects across 15 counties

Omnibus Crime Control grants totaling nearly 1 million dollars were announced for 15 Ohio projects. The awards were given by Dr. David C. Sweet, director of the state Department of Economic and Community Development, with the largest grant of 172,840 dollars to continue planning the South Central Regional Juvenile Detention Center serving Ross, Pickaway, Highland, Pike, Jackson and Vinton counties.

Hurricane Delia Poised to Strike Louisiana Coast Tuesday

Tropical Storm Delia is expected to reach hurricane strength by late today and likely strike the Louisiana coast on Tuesday. At 6 a.m. Delia centered about 340 miles south-southeast of New Orleans with winds near 60 mph, moving north-northwest at 10 mph. Christine was near 60 mph and near Antigua tonight.
