In Managua and other cities scattered bomb blasts and gunfire hit several locations as a general strike against President Anastasio Somoza shut down most commerce. Red Cross officials warned of more bloodshed today as clashes continued with no fresh pitched battles reported.
National Guardsmen set up roadblocks and spot checks across Managua and surrounding towns amid five day uprising. Red Cross reports warn of violence with many businesses closed in Chinandega Jinotepe and Esteli while streets turn ghostly in Esteli and bomb blasts keep tension high.
Negotiations resume between the Postal Service and three unions over pay and the no layoff clause. James J. Healy, mediator, seeks a voluntary settlement by Sept 16 with arbitration if needed. Unions demand 14 percent first year raise plus cost of living, rejecting a 19.5 percent three year package.
In Belmore Ohio tomato growers allege federal grants funneled to La Raza Unida are backing a week old migrant worker strike. FLOC and La Raza deny misused funds, claiming support goes to eligible workers for temporary housing and subsistence while condemning any coercive pay to deter work.
Hurricane Ella strengthened to 120 mph offshore of North Carolina as forecasters predicted a northward curve that would spare the coast. The Outer Banks remained under a hurricane watch while evacuations and cancellations affected local tourism and coastal operations.
President Jose Lopez Portillo announced in a state of the union address that Mexico's oil reserves may total about 200 billion barrels with trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, potentially redefining the global energy map. He cited vast offshore and inland pools and noted PEMEX has revised reserves upward, while U.S. planners eye Mexico as a major energy source amid price and policy tensions with OPEC.
Gen Omar Torrijos says he does not want to be named president or continue as head of government after his term expires October 1. He will remain commander of the national guard. The National Assembly plans to convene October 11 and elect a president as a figurehead post.
Police misdirected a training drill by placing two sticks of dynamite in a car. A 77 year old man, Richard L. McCartney of Maplewood, saw his parking ticket number flashed on TV and learned his car, containing the dynamite, had been released from a St Louis airport lot.
Two Chicago Transit Authority elevated trains collided on a northbound track after the rush hour peak. One train plowed into the rear of the other at a slight curve, derailing both and causing minor injuries to eight passengers. Five officials provided the account.
Tonight and Sunday morning will see clear skies with clouds forming in the afternoon. Highs reach the low 80s after a low in the upper 50s. Monday to Wednesday bring fair skies and highs from the upper 70s to mid 80s, with lows in the upper to low 50s.
