Typhoon Wanda devastates Hong Kong killing 39

A savage typhoon struck Hong Kong on Saturday, leaving at least 39 dead, 13 missing, 397 injured, and more than 10,000 homeless. Winds up to 160 mph, a six foot tide, and widespread flooding hit refugee shelters and squatter huts, with ships grounded and harbors damaged. American and European residents faced property loss but no injuries.

Death toll heads toward 500 figure this Labor Day

The National Safety Council warned the Labor Day weekend could surpass 500 traffic deaths as 17 people died in three crashes in Arkansas, Minnesota and West Virginia. By 11 pm EST Saturday the tally stood at 171 for the weekend, with 143 traffic deaths and 17 miscellaneous fatalities. A cold front brought showers and storms, increasing highway hazards during the holiday travel rush. The record Labor Day toll was 461 in 1951.

Five die in West Virginia Turnpike crash near Charleston

A head on collision between a compact car and a trailer truck on the West Virginia Turnpike killed five, including three Chicago bound youths and two Kroehler Manufacturing Co. drivers from Xenia Ohio. The blaze followed the impact near Memorial Tunnel at 6:15 am.

Mother of 15 Dies in Crash Near Litchfield Minn

Six people died in a head on collision on U S 12 near Litchfield Minnesota early Saturday. The widowed mother of 15, Mrs Austin Casey of Darwin in her 50s, was among the dead. Three youths in the other car were teenagers. A motorist reported the youths’ car passed at a high rate of speed before the crash. Six total fatalities plus three critical injuries. Mrs Casey’s husband died about three years ago.

Brandt Says West Won’t Wreck Berlin Wall Standoff

Berlin mayor Willy Brandt warned Saturday that the West will not force down the Berlin Wall. He said four power guarantees exist, but no Western or Soviet statesman can promise the four power status for all Berlin. Meanwhile U S Army escorts accompanied a Soviet convoy to the Russian War Memorial in the British sector, illustrating ongoing four power tensions over access and sovereignty.

President Kennedy voiced alignment with Senate and House Republican leaders on exploiting the Berlin Wall issue. Guard Rescues Boy After Pool Belly Flop

Burlington Wisconsin AP reports five year old Patrick Carlson of Cincinnati was knocked out by a belly flop dive at a motel pool. Lifeguard Greg Nelson 18 applied mouth to mouth resuscitation after the boy stopped breathing while rescue squad was delayed by a freight train. The father Robert Carlson dived in clothes to pull the boy from the water.

U S Says Navy Plane Was Attacked Off Cuba

U S authorities report strong eyewitness evidence that a two engined Navy patrol plane was fired on by two small ships off Cuba's north coast during a routine training flight. The crew saw gun flashes and described 20mm or 50 cal weapons. Castro denies White House claims. No photographs or tracer rounds were found. Kennedy administration officials discount Russian troop claims in Cuba.
