Defector to Cong Returns To Military Service

Joan M. Sweeney a 21 year old Marine who said he defected to the Viet Cong after his company commander shot at him and left him for dead has returned to the United States at his parents request and is undergoing military debriefing. He arrived from Stockholm where he requested voluntary return to military control and is in St Albans Naval Hospital for debriefing and exam. No charges have been filed and the family traveled to Sweden after a recent news conference. Sweeney claimed 18 months with the liberation forces and work for a Viet Cong propaganda brigade before being treated for malaria. The Marine Corps disputes some details of his account and notes he disappeared from his platoon and was listed as missing in action in February 1969.
