Western Electric found guilty of job bias in hiring
U S District Court Judge Herbert Stern ruled Western Electric Co discriminated against women at its Kearny New Jersey facility in hiring promotion and training. The decision notes women were largely excluded from top jobs while clerical and operative positions were filled by females. The judge also cited a conspiracy to deprive a worker of constitutional rights and stated one third of Kearny’s 7100 workers are women but few high level posts are held by them. The case centers on Kyriaki Kyriazi who was fired in 1971 after six years with the firm and alleged harassment by co workers and supervisors. The judge noted Western altered personnel forms to conceal sex bias and that some supervisors tacitly encouraged harassment.

ITT loses bid to seal bribery charges from public view
The Supreme Court allowed public disclosure of SEC allegations against ITT over about 9 million dollars in foreign payoffs from 1970 to 1975. ITT argued secrecy would protect its business, but the court did not grant emergency relief. Meanwhile, a separate Berrellez case seeks to shield trial documents tied to ITT and CIA actions in Chile's 1970 election.

Supreme Court secrecy questioned by Justice Stevens
Justice Stevens warns colleagues that written dissents in non reviewed cases erode court confidentiality. He calls such opinions unnecessary and argues confidentiality outweighs any educational value. The court discusses thousands of cases yearly in closed conferences, with denial leaving lower court rulings intact.
