Washington reported a 0.7 percent September drop in the index of leading economic indicators signaling a slower recovery. The August index was revised higher but the declines reflect weaker orders for consumer goods, shorter work weeks, higher manufacturing layoffs, and weaker vendor performance.
The AP reports Ford aides float nearing win with a final pre election push in Milwaukee St. Louis and Houston as Carter criticizes the GOP for failing to curb inflation and unemployment. Carter campaigns in Philadelphia St. Louis and Toledo while accusing Republicans of siding with special interests and not addressing basic costs.
President Ford tied Ohio to a central role in supplying fuel for nuclear plants. He cited expanding the Portsmouth uranium enrichment plant as critical, promising 6,000 new Southern Ohio jobs and construction could start early next year with a projected cost of billions.
In Cleveland Ohio President Ford and challenger Carter focus on turnout in Cuyahoga County with Cleveland seen as pivotal for Ohio's 25 electoral votes. Carter plans a Toledo rally after New York stay while Ford aims to retain support in the Democratic stronghold and boost his prospects elsewhere.
Carter drew 10 000 to 15 000 people to an outdoor downtown rally with his wife Rosalyn and Sen John Glenn present. He promised a quiet speech but urged a possible tax cut under a Carter administration while outlining growth and job targets tied to a new uranium plant expansion in Pikeston.
Katima Anne Rogers and James J. Klosterman won the senior and junior divisions of the Outstanding Newspaper Carrier Achievement Awards at a dinner at Congress Inn. Rogers, 16, delivers in several city routes and supports community groups. Klosterman, a Fenwick High School student, has top science fair results and helps with the paper route.
