United Nations military units in the Congo have been ordered to shoot at rebellious Congolese troops resisting UN authority. The order declares any opposition to UN efforts to maintain law and order as aggression, reversing past rules that arms were used only in self defense.
AP reports Associated Press correspondent Michael Goldsmith was sheltered by United Nations protection after Congolese soldiers tried to storm his hotel room at the Memling. The 39 year old British subject had been reporting on violence by Mobutu's forces and Belgian instructors. UN forces escorted him to safety and later to UN headquarters, citing a mandate to protect basic freedoms in the Congo.
President Eisenhower launched a vigorous defense of Nixon on a national stage in Philadelphia. He criticized Kennedy’s charges on leadership, urged calm, and defended America's global standing while praising Nixon as the best qualified to lead. He labeled some campaign statements as dangerous distortions of America’s image and demanded correction.

The couple’s two young sons, Donald, 5, and Daniel, 3, were with relatives in Harrisburg. Rifer claimed a Friday quarrel over him leaving the home led to the hammer blow and pistol shots.
In Indianapolis three top Carpenters Union officials Maurice Hutcheson William Blaier and Frank Chapman were found guilty of bribing Indiana Highway official Harry Doggett to gain advance information on proposed routes in Wayte and Lake counties. They face up to 214 years in prison and fines up to 15 000 each with sentencing set for November 28.
