From Camp Hartell to a Striking Bridgeport Teacher
Milford father of three Jim Santo, a Bridgeport math teacher, spent six days jailed at Camp Hartell with 260 other teachers for defying a back to work order during a 19 day strike. The episode spotlights a national surge in teacher walkouts and evolving union tensions in the 1970s. Santo, not a union officer, faces daily fines if appeals fail, while his family adapts to lost pay and shifting school conditions. He argues the strike underscored teachers’ demand for respect and better resources in a decaying system, despite salary gains.
