Beavers dam a creek between a cornfield and a railroad track near East Rochester, flooding pasture and corn. The Lippincotts report eight foot wide dam, water backing into fields after a long drought across Ohio. They fear the dam will ruin more crops unless the beavers are removed.
The Kennedy administration quietly nudges astronaut John H. Glenn Jr toward running for the Ohio Senate seat held by Stephen Young. GOP prospects in Ohio loom, with Rep. Robert Taft Jr. possibly entering a race Bricker looms as a potential rival. Glenn, 41, still active in space work, has declined a $1 million industrial offer over 10 years per his attorney C Lee DeOrsey.
A massive explosion at the Ohio Firework Co. in Bellaire sent embers over a 15 mile radius, damaging homes and prompting evacuations of about 300, with one man critically burned and reports of another death. Firefighters from eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania battled multiple fires as a mushroom cloud rose over the town.

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute tested the nation s first reactor to generate electricity. The unit powered lights at an industrial club house near the Tokai site, a project costing 12.5 million dollars financed by General Electric of the United States.

Premier Khrushchev stated the Soviet Union is not currently racing to put a man on the moon and wishes the United States success in a 1970 deadline. He warned Moscow could halt American wheat purchases if Washington imposes discriminatory terms, and noted grave agricultural difficulties linked in observers’ eyes to a space program cutback. He stressed study of U S moon efforts and cautioned against hasty competition, while cosmonauts with Cuba, Mexico, and New York trips suggested ongoing moon ambitions.
