The five nation Western European Union will formally request a military alliance with the United States. A draft North Atlantic Security Treaty is already drawn and a final version should reach the U S Senate for approval in about three months.
Paris AP report says United States Britain and France propose to keep the Berlin question on the UN Security Council agenda. A 70 minute meeting among Marshall Bevin and Schuman discussed a potential North Atlantic defense treaty with Canada and Western Europe. Officials note a post election timing for formal steps and treaty drafting with Western European Union members.
President Truman told Hartford, Connecticut crowds that rents would rise at least 20 percent next month if Republicans win the election. He claimed GOP policies would threaten labor and unions, labeling them labor-baiting and open shop.
President Truman and Gov. Dewey traded sharp charges across Ohio Illinois and New York as they head toward next week’s election. Truman accused Dewey of false promises and poll manipulation while Dewey blasted the Truman administration as reckless and weak on foreign policy and urged voters to reject fear tactics. She had admitted marrying ex-GI Paul Mayer of Albany, Ga., and pleaded guilty to violating immigration laws. Mayer pleaded guilty to harboring an alien. Judge Scarlett ordered her deportation and turned her over to immigration authorities. Mayer was sentenced to a year and a day.
President Truman campaigned in Cleveland accusing poll driven Republicans of rigging surveys and aiming to lull voters before next Tuesday’s election. Dewey pressed in Cleveland, while Herbert criticized Truman as endorsing all of his blunders. Ohio holds 25 electoral votes as Taft assailed Truman’s Palestine stance. An Ironton Republican challenger spoke at the Democratic National Headquarters about a $100 a month claim.
A rapid back-to-work movement sent many buses rolling in New York City as the city’s largest surface transit strike neared end. A rank-and-file group among transit workers resisted orders from their CIO union to return.
A coal miners train in the back-to-work movement derailed near Marseille causing five hours of traffic disruption. Authorities blamed sabotage after reports of spikes pulled in a tunnel. The incident followed Communist threats of a general strike amid France’s 23 day coal strike with 13,508 workers reporting to Lorraine fields.
United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis urged President Truman to halt the shooting of hungry French coal miners. Addressing AFL President William Green he asked that the President intervene to end the 23 day old French mine strike.

A foggy morning crash in Uhrichsville Ohio left engineer Gordon C. Aley and fireman Charles A. Carr dead when a Pennsylvania train struck a tractor trailer rig carrying steel. Ten others, including three passengers, were treated at the scene. the wreck derailed eight cars of the 13 car train, with the locomotive demolished.

Pro government reports say a major clash is forming between Mukden, home to China’s largest arsenal, and Chinhsien, an industrial city seized from the Nationalists two weeks ago. The struggle centers on Manchuria as the government tries to maintain a foothold.
Los Angeles AP Robert Mitchum facing narcotics trial was sued for 2500 damages by Nanette Bordeaux. She alleges trespass at Laurel Canyon home on September 1 by Mitchum Lila Leeds Vicki Evans and Robin Ford after their narcotics arrest. Bordeaux rented the home to Virginia Ann Hyland and did not permit subletting. Furniture and walls reportedly burned and destroyed.
An automobile overturn killed elderly West Unity couple Daniel King 62 and his wife Letha 60 last night in Bryan Ohio. The AP dispatch notes the fatalities in a rural collision scene with no further details provided.
Israel declines the acting Palestine mediator's order to withdraw from newly seized Negev points in Southern Palestine. Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok says the October 19 UN cease fire does not mandate pulling back to October 14 lines. Bunche to present reply to the Security Council for decision.
A U S war crimes court in Nuremberg acquitted 13 German military leaders of plotting World War II and conspiracy. Field Marshal Wilhelm von Leeb was convicted of crimes against civilization, while Field Marshal Hugo Sperrle was cleared on all counts. The panel said lower staff acts do not meet international crime definitions, and conspiracy charges were dropped.
Lenore Shanhouse, 19, student at Smith College, had been missing since Monday. Mrs Ida Shanhouse of Bay Ridge Maryland reported by phone that Lenore was safe and unharmed in Montreal. An uncle said the mother was told the student had been seized by three men in a college campus incident.
About 40 truck drivers remain parked on a three day protest in Carlisle against the firing of fellow driver Wilbur Ritchie from Daniels Motor Freight of Warren Colorado. The drivers refused J. W. Cox Sept request to release cargoes and meet later while shipments valued at about 1.6 million dollars bound for New York and Philadelphia await action.
