In Reseda California a black mare swam in a residential pool after neighbors called police. Doug Owens found the horse treading water at both ends. police tried coaxing ropes a ramp and more. The mare entered from an adjacent pasture through an open gate and eventually climbed out after Owens joined in.
The Capitol rotunda held the nation’s 90 year old 31st president Herbert Hoover as mourners filed by the flag draped casket. President Johnson, the Hoover family and dignitaries attended the somber rite with armed escorts, salutes, and a horse drawn caisson. About 2,500 visitors entered in the first hour as the public began two days of viewing.
Vatican City AP report notes the council voted that a schema on birth control is acceptable for discussion despite criticism from both conservatives and progressives. Pope Paul VI said a fourth session will be convened after the current third ends November 21, to address family life nuclear warfare and other modern issues.
A Piqua woman, Helen Hullora, 57, died after her northbound car drifted into the median and struck a southbound bulldozer truck on I 75 near Manchester Road. The collision involved a second vehicle driven by Mrs. Clementine Wray, 25, of Springboro, injuring Wray and her infant daughter. The wreck knocked loose the bulldozer and left Hullora dead from head injuries. Funeral arrangements are being handled in Piqua and nearby.
Sen. Barry Goldwater accused the White House of involvement in questionable activities while addressing about 12,000 in San Diego, linking the Baker scandal to the Johnson administration and criticizing the White House for not pursuing a grand jury inquiry. He planned to campaign in Austin, Corpus Christi, and Wichita Falls.
Navy reservist Alice Ewing denied killing Wanda Cook and faced a court hearing on removing the body from a hotel. Detective Chief Henry Sandman said Ewing implicated Robert Abbott in the murder. Abbott, 21, Dayton, Kentucky, is charged with first degree murder. Ewing agreed to take a lie detector test and was released on bond after questioning. She moved the body from the Sheraton Gibson Hotel to Cincinnati Union Terminal and then to Cleveland. The charge against her for moving the body and failing to report the death is a misdemeanor carrying up to 500 dollars fine.
President Johnson will spend most of the campaign period away from the White House. He flies to Memphis for an outdoor rally, then Chattanooga for an airport event, returns to Washington, and heads to Baltimore for a fundraising dinner before a two day tour of Florida Georgia and South Carolina.
Mrs Lyndon B Johnson starts a four day flying whistle stop campaign visit to six states including Pennsylvania Texas Oklahoma Arkansas Indiana and Kentucky aboard a DNC chartered turbo prop plane. aides say she will join President in final stretch of bid.
