Western Pennsylvania steel haulers rejected a compromise to end their walkout by a 462 to 341 margin in Pittsburgh. Pilot General Says Weakened Air War Fueled Losses

Retired Maj. Gen. Gilbert E Myers told the Senate preparedness subcommittee that Washington limits on bombing in North Vietnam left pilots with one hand tied behind their backs. He cited slow target release and argued more lucrative targets were not struck, increasing losses. Other generals testified the Joint Chiefs of Staff favored heavier air strikes, but the plan was not adopted.

Mill Worker Goes Berserk Kills Six in Lock Haven Shootout

Six Hammermill Paper Co workers were killed and eight wounded when Leo Held, 39, a lab technician, opened fire at the mill in Lock Haven Pennsylvania then fled to Loganton and later fired at officers and at Piper Aircraft plant where a girl office worker was hit. Police recovered multiple rifles and pistols. The motive remains unknown.

Pilots Await Rescue After Yukon Plane Crash

Three pilots missing since October 13 in the Yukon wilds were found alive near their downed plane in the Blow River Valley. Thor Trontveit Rolf Storhavg and Einar Pedersen, all unhurt aside from bruises, were located 90 miles southwest of Inuvik. A rescue party supplied radio gear food and medical supplies and awaited helicopter access.
