Allen Thompson, city engineer, laid out a 400 foot across American Revolution Bicentennial symbol using stakes and survey gear on land shared with Oliver Hill. The design, partly on cemetery property and partly on Hill’s Cedarbrook Campground, took two days and cost about $200 to complete.
American novelist Saul Bellow won the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature in a historic American sweep of all five Nobel prizes. Born in Canada and raised in Chicago, he is cited for human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture.
The Labor Department reports September CPI up 0.4 percent as grocery prices fall for the first time in six months. Real earnings declined 0.5 percent while overall inflation remains near 5 to 6 percent, with CPI at 172.6 in September and prices up 58 percent over the past year.
Federal Power Commission cuts 25 percent of its $2 billion natural gas price rise after discovering actual consumer increases would exceed early estimates. The revised figures lower expected nationwide impact to about $1.462 billion, with regional bills ranging from roughly $5.20 to $23.14. Producers reactivating old wells were found to be exploiting the higher price.
The FTC approved an order barring Sears Roebuck from bait and switch tactics for major home appliances. Sears admitted no wrongdoing but pledged future compliance. The order carries the force of law with potential penalties of 10,000 per offense for violations.
