Los Angeles AP reports the Finch Tre golf retrial enters jury deliberations after 16 weeks. Dr. R. Bernard Finch, 42, and his mistress Carole Tre golf face the state's charge of murdering his wife. Prosecutor asserts guilt as jurors weigh the evidence and arguments.
Australian scientist Frank MacFarlane Burnet and British scientist Peter Medawar win the 1960 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of acquired immunological tolerance. They share a prize of 43 627 dollars (225 987 Swedish crowns) awarded by the Royal Caroline Institute after a two hour session. The announcement clarifies the Nobel prizes honor medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, funded by Alfred Nobel’s fortune.
Leopoldville Province President Cleophas Kamitatu accused Col Joseph Mobutu of arming soldiers in the capital and warned a 48 hour expulsion or civilian mobilization. He ordered an arms ban, a 30 day newspaper shutdown, and reinforced police with U N guards while vowing to seek provincial secession if Mobutu does not yield. In Chesterfield England five hundred hosiery workers protested a security policy requiring them to lift skirts and unbutton blouses to prove no garments were smuggled. Supervisor Edna Cooke conducted some checks but paused the practice after complaints. managing director Kenneth Allen apologized and the strike threat faded.

Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Valerian Zorin warned of a walkout if Western arms reduction proposals persist, while U S ambassador James J Wadsworth refused to back down demanding a fair East West balance adequate inspections and step by step progress.
LITTLETON NH AP Nixon a presidential candidate has been eliminated as a possible witness in the federal tax evasion trial of Mark Granite 78. The case involves a letter Nixon wrote to Granite to be admitted as evidence. Dora Vale Granite 62 testified naming contributors to the Granite Foundation set up by her husband as a nonprofit educational and historical operation. The government says funds were diverted to lawn uses and made taxable. Granite faces charges of failing to report 60000 in personal income over four years.
New York AP Kennedy staff prepare a point by point reply to Nixon campaign’s broadside alleging Kennedy misstatements. Kennedy plans to address the White Paper later today while campaigning with Nixon at the Al Smith dinner. He says the religious issue will not decide the election and focuses on Friday’s debate prep.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev announced to 15000 Muscovites at Luzhniki Stadium that the USSR now has atom powered submarines armed with nuclear rockets. He warned that Western disarmament talks mask an ongoing arms race and noted Western plans at the U N assembly. He called the old order an impediment to progress.

Vice President Richard M Nixon outlined a plan to create a National Economic Council to coordinate federal efforts for healthy economic growth while preserving Federal Reserve independence. He spoke at a National Association of Business Economists event, calling it a key part of his 12 point program.
Washington authorities say the United States has gone as far as possible with sanctions on Fidel Castro's Cuba. A recent Commerce Department embargo targets machinery and industrial equipment while medical supplies and some foodstuffs are exempt. The Maritime Commission barred transfer of American ships to Cuba as part of the effort.
