President Truman pauses all campaign travel until Saturday while Dewey begins a final city tour. In New York, Dewey plans a Herald Tribune Forum address and a Memorial Dinner for Alfred E. Smith, keeping the pace steady as the election nears.
A 24 hour strike snarled railway traffic along the Riviera in sympathy with a crippling mine strike now in its 17th day. The Communist led railway union called the Mediterranean area strike to back wage demands of 15 000 francs a month. The coal strike has halted over 2 000 000 tons of fuel and left 335 000 miners idle. President Truman seeks support for a four year White House lease as Mrs Roosevelt writes from Paris backing his candidacy.
The United Nations voted to refer the atomic energy dispute to the Big Five and Canada to seek agreement on core principles. A Soviet proposal to outlaw the atom bomb with an energy control body was rejected by the committee, while an Indian proposal to return to treaty talks based on majority findings was also defeated. The roll call showed 39 to 6 with seven abstentions, with only the six Soviet bloc nations backing the Soviet measure. The push to send the dispute back to the United States, USSR, Britain, France, China, and Canada was via a Canadian resolution.
Pravda labels the revised Canadian resolution on the UN Atomic Energy Commission a trick by the Anglo American majority. It argues the changes create an impression of concessions while actually reducing them to nothing through later qualifications. Pravda says the shifts aim to win support from doubtful nations and notes U S pressure on wavering delegates.

Berlin observers claimed 3000 special police were imported from the Russian occupation zone to bolster Communist control in the Soviet blockaded city. U S deputy commandant Babcock could not confirm the figure but noted Moscow’s police buildup across eastern Germany including Berlin. Authorities say expanded police may tighten the blockade on western Berlin by checking all vehicles trains and ships for contraband.
The Public Health Service reports 1,445,370 US deaths in 1947, up 49,753 from 1946, with a death rate of 10.1 per 1000, second lowest ever. Population growth of about 3.72 million kept the rate low, likening the loss to a city larger than Chicago.
Three young children died in a fatal blaze that engulfed their upstairs hallway in Kansas City. Parents George Smith and Dorothy Smith escaped by leaping from a porch roof after saving their other child Ralph. Frances seven, Karen six, and Larry four perished in the fire.
Two unrelated incidents feature a farmer who killed his tenant after an argument over a radio prize program and two men in Baltimore tied to bogus check schemes. J A Mc Donald, 76, shot Jackson W Bailey, 68, at Rootstown Township over a dispute about Jack Benny programs. In Baltimore, Vice Admiral William J Sacks, 38, and War rant Officer Edward E Bastedo, 24, face grand jury action after $110 cash and clothing worth $107 plus gold braid were seized via bogus checks.
In Donnelsville, a well drilling rig struck a 12,000 volt high tension line causing Cecil Glaser a 44 year old Dayton operator to be electrocuted. The incident occurred yesterday and is being investigated by authorities.
A twin engined Soviet bomber with two officer deserters landed at Linz air base in the American zone of Austria on October 9. The sergeant returned to Russia custody while two officers sought refuge in the U.S. zone. The plane was damaged but no one was injured. The U.S. and Soviet authorities debated immediate return of the crew and craft with the sergeant choosing to return.
The court denied appeals from Roger Williams and Lester Nichols and set November 19 as their execution date. Williams, 34, of Logan County, killed Minta Webb Rothwell at Indian Lake on May 28, 1947, and Nichols, 43, of Allen County, murdered Lewis Whitaker on May 6, 1946. Both had indefinite stays previously.
Margreta Hedrich 37 widow of Reinhard Heydrich was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment. Reported by ADN she lives in the British zone of Germany. Court charged her with torturing Jews who served as slave laborers for Heydrich.
The Metropolitan Opera announces its 64th season opening November 29 with Verdi Otello. Seven operas will be revived and nine new artists debut, including six young Americans, as General Manager Edward Johnson disclosed after labor difficulties were resolved.
Governor Earl Warren spoke to the American Legion in Miami urging a single long term foreign policy free from vacillation and appeasement. He urged strength to deter aggression and explained the policy would reassure allies and supporters worldwide. The parade and events drew up to 400000 observers despite a late shower.
Los Angeles AP reporting Police Chief C H Anderson of Beverly Hills will testify before the grand jury criminal complaints committee next Tuesday about who killed gangster Benjamin Bugsy Siegel. Anderson says he has received threats since revealing he knows the slayer’s name and the committee chairman Leo Hubbard urged him to disclose for his protection.
Grief stricken parents appeal through their church for abductor to negotiate and for any clue no matter how trivial. The two and a half month old girl was taken from a parked carriage in broad daylight while her mother, Mrs Michael Mezzanotte, was in a drugstore.
Mrs. John Henry Spillman, 48, wife of a state penitentiary camp captain, was found beaten and stabbed to death at her Angola home. James Bruce, a black inmate assigned as cook at the Spillman residence, is being sought for questioning, according to penitentiary Superintendent R. H. Lawrence.
In Korea a rebel band reportedly 4000 strong attacked Yosu and Sunchon after police stations were burned and a police uprising began. Loyal troops and police battled insurgents as martial law was declared in South Korea. U.S. General Orlando Ward said Americans were not involved. Moscow radio said Soviet troops began evacuating parts of northern Korea. President Rhee commented the Russians are doing the right thing and will cooperate.
Government forces reeled today as Communist troops struck on multiple fronts. New threats to Taiyuan in Shansi and Kweisui in Suiyuan emerged, Changchun in Manchuria appeared to fall, and Chefoo in Shantung was evacuated by government forces.
Chicago AP reports a stable fire at Hawthorne racecourse last night destroyed the facility after a meeting ended Saturday. U Stable watchman Henry Johnson says about 20 horses perished, averaging $2000 each, with many deemed only fair quality. Several horses were reportedly saved, roaming the countryside as a final tally awaited.
A Trenton woman, 64, Mrs Conrad Lewing of State Street, was hit by a B and O freight train at the Trenton Crossing today while returning from a grocery with bananas. She suffered head lacerations, was taken to Middletown Hospital for observation and treated for scalp injuries.
New York pathologist Dr. Frank W. Foote reported to the American College of Surgeons that spindle and giant cell thyroid cancer is a fast spreading form that often kills within months. In 30 cases observed, 28 died, with two unlocated. the cancer can compress the esophagus and windpipe and may cause death before symptoms appear.
Los Angeles AP reports Howard Hughes plans taxi tests for his $25 million giant plywood flying boat on November 15 with a flight about a month later. Hughes briefly flew the aircraft last fall in an unscheduled flight, the world’s largest aircraft at the time.
The 19 year old Clark Hill faces first degree murder charges in Medina Ohio over the death of 17 year old Jeanette Weimer. His physician testified Hill did not show carbon monoxide poisoning signs when examined the day of the tragedy. The state argues a sex stimulant and seduction were key elements of the alleged crime.
