U S military sources say Israeli warplanes have achieved air superiority over the Suez Canal Sinai battlefront after strikes on Egypt's antiaircraft defenses. Israeli air losses were light recently, while Arab toll tops 300 aircraft. Moshe Dayan reportedly visited front line troops.
Washington reports that beef prices and supplies are rising but the government says it will take until next spring before total beef availability returns to normal levels despite more counters showing beef this summer.
Former White House counsel John W. Dean III pleaded guilty to conspiring to obstruct the Watergate inquiry and agreed to cooperate with the special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Beiruit AP says Saudi Arabia will reduce oil production by 10 percent in October and November and may halt all oil shipments to the United States unless Washington changes its stance on the Israeli-Arab conflict. A further 5 percent monthly cut is planned after November. Abu Dhabi also cut shipments to the US. Saudi work in oil exports ranks third to Canada and Venezuela as US suppliers.
Canton Ohio AP says production facilities of the Coca Cola Bottling Co in Canton were destroyed by a midnight fire. Firemen reported flames bursting from the roof when they arrived after a security guard triggered the alarm. Cause and damage estimate were not available.
The FTC orders 76 DC funeral directors to submit prices for their three cheapest funerals in a pilot project. Rosch says the study will break down packages item by item and may force disclosures on caskets vaults and unnecessary services. If antitrust violations emerge, action could follow. The commission notes average funeral cost around $2,000 with 22,000 directors nationwide.
