The Commerce Department reports real GDP fell 2.9 percent in the latest quarter despite 8.3 percent nominal growth. Inflation eroded 11.5 percent of value, leaving output barely above 1972 levels. Fed officials and economists call it a recession, citing oil embargo, prices, and high interest rates as factors.
Remains of ten airmen missing since May 7 1944 after a B24 crash in New Guinea were found in a remote tropical valley. Army officials say it was not possible to identify individuals but physical evidence confirms all ten were present. The bodies will be interred in two caskets with military honors and a joint service conducted by chaplains of Protestant Catholic and Jewish faiths.
