A midnight walkout by AFL Teamsters in New York and surrounding areas idles over 23,000 drivers and threatens regional commerce. Mediation failed, Mayor Wagner sought delay. union demands include 20 cent hourly wage hike and 5 cent pension boost. Strike affects New York City, Long Island, parts of New Jersey and up to Poughkeepsie with freight disruptions likely Monday or later.

Adlai Stevenson charges the Eisenhower administration with abandoning nonpartisanship in the Defense Department by letting Secretary Wilson campaign for Republicans. Nike Tests In Arctic Cold For Nike Missile System

Washington and Ottawa announced January and February Arctic trials of the Nike guided missile at Fort Churchill Hudson Bay to test operation in 50 degree below zero wind chill with Canadian crews and U S Army technicians. Pentagon officials also revealed a 280 mm cannon test using conventional shells at Churchill.

British Boat Inchkilda Fired On By Warship

An unidentified warship fired across the bows of the Inchkilda to halt her in the Formosa Strait. The 1,908-ton British freighter was held for almost an hour before being allowed to proceed with no damage or casualties reported. The warship demanded information on nationality cargo and destination and ordered the ship to keep clear of Shanghai. The Inchkilda, owned by Williamson & Co of Hong Kong and chartered by a Chinese company, is British commanded by a British master.

Seoul police report North Korean communists stage narcotics warfare sending opium and morphine into South Korea with espionage agents. They say narcotics fund operations, lower morale of ROK forces and UN troops, and recent seizures of enormous narcotics tied to captured spies.

Flood Surges Cause Evacuations in Eastlake

The Chagrin River rose over four feet above flood stage, flooding Eastlake streets to depths of three to four feet and sending about 100 residents from their homes. Water peaked above 15 feet, far over the 11 foot flood stage, with cots on a tavern dance floor housing 35 evacuees overnight.

Eisenhower Blames Dems for Farm Buying Power Dip

President Eisenhower addressed a 15,000 crowd at Butler University in Indianapolis, blaming the Truman administration for a serious drop in farmers buying power in 1951 52. He praised Benson and GOP farm legislation, urged election of a Republican Congress to sustain farm prosperity, and spoke at a farm belt rally before returning to Washington.

Reds Claim Americans Aggressors at United Nations

At the United Nations, Russia accused the United States of aggression against Red China and urged the General Assembly to condemn U S actions near Formosa and along the Chinese mainland. U S delegate Lodge Jr dismissed the charge as a plain lie and rejected calls to halt aid to the Nationalists.

Keystone Flood Danger Passes and Hazel Storm Hits Cities

The Associated Press reports Hurricane Hazel devastated an eight state area and Washington, D.C., killing at least 68 people and causing widespread damage from Florida to Pennsylvania. In Pittsburgh, rivers rose flooding homes while elsewhere the storm killed and injured dozens, damaged infrastructure, and left millions in losses. A separate Ontario storm battered southern Ontario with four deaths and millions in damage, flooding farms and halting rail and road traffic.

Six Students Die In Car Train Crash

ST CLOUD Minn Six high school sophomores returning from a homecoming football game were killed when a passenger train struck their car tearing it apart. Victims included Sharon Roder Shirley Hinkemeyer Janice Johnson Nancy Minars from St. Cloud Cathedral High School and William Ehli and Larry Stoltman from nearby schools. Police identified Janice Johnson as the driver.

Bomber Crashes Killing Three Near Nebraska City

A World War II B25 trainer crashed on a farm six miles northwest of Nebraska City after a routine flight from Offutt Air Force Base. Pilot Maj. Joseph H. Tichenor, 32, co pilot Capt. Truman G. Kolis, 36, and crew chief A. C. John E. Hindman, were killed. Tichenor’s home was Louisville Kentucky Kolis was from Rock Island Illinois Hindman from near Butler Pennsylvania.

Disease and floods take forty lives in Tampico

Officials said floods and an unidentified epidemic killed at least 40 people in coastal towns near Tampico Mexico. Five drowned and 35 children died from the mysterious illness after the floods. The storm wrecked Panuco and Reventadero, with thousands of acres flooded and heavy livestock losses.
